Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

I did experience MANYother types of OCD thoughts and behaviors. It all started at the age of 8 and progressed till my high school years. Many years of severe OCD which drove me nearly suicidal. So in my case it did go away,, but took a hell of a long time to dissipate. You will notice it going away when your OCD starts coming and going, with the intensity diminishing and increasing over time. So for me it began to phase out over a period of time where for example I would have severe OCD for a month, then the next month nothing, then a month of OCD and another two months without. Once you start seeing this sort of pattern its a good sign. It eventually loses its strength and disappears. The worst is when the OCD is continuous and doesn't shape-shift much. Then you know that you are dealing with the beginning or the middle stages of it.
I did talk to a psychiatrist once who said that its unique that my OCD had completely went away. He mentioned that usually its pervasive throughout ones life. It can change form where you will constantly gain new types of OCD thoughts and behaviors. In my particular case the OCD has been substituted with an impulse control disorder. I dont know exactly which is worse.
So I do have hope for improvement because I absolutely hate being forced by my mind to skin pick. Its just agony because I have to deal with the wound healing and a lot of band-aids (unlike past OCD issues which weren't physically evident but would just torment me inside my mind).
Yet I can't say that the OCD I experienced when I was younger was of less severity. I totally understand the emotional pain it causes and just thinking about it gives me the chills. My childhood was torment and there are very few memories that I have which are good. The OCD did a really good job at eradicating most of my joy. I have read somewhere that OCD is the mental disorder which causes the most life dissatisfaction. I guess unlike full blown depression, people with OCD have the desire to live a normal life and they have that inner motivation yet its subdued by the disorder. ( Its difficult to enjoy life when your mind dictates you. )
Ahh and now I remember that my brother had your particular OCD for some time. He would feel guilty about even the most minor of things. He would be endlessly worried about upsetting or hurting others. It eventually went away and now he is struggling with a form of OCD which makes him doubt his driving (he thinks he hit a pedestrian at almost every intersection), along with the typical good old organizing and cleanliness OCD. I guess I also have had only very brief instances of OCD recently...isolated cases of false memory OCD. The mind can create false memories and be incredibly convincing. But they were just a few isolated cases, so nothing which upset me too much.
I am now worried that if I curb my skin picking behavior, I will turn up with something else which will be worse. Hah, its like you never know what comes next! Oh the joy of mental disorders!
