Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
Hello. I'm a 17 year old girl whose been struggling a long time with OCD, given the fact that I'm also an incredibly anxious person does not help the fact of avoiding compulsions.
In the morning I linger on getting out of bed because I know that just getting dressed and washing up will be a ridiculously long challenge with unnecessary steps, but I get so tense and worked up that if I don't follow them I will obsess about it until either it is 'fixed' or probably for the rest of the day. I will take off and put back on a shirt several times because perhaps the first 8 or 9 times didn't feel right. I could sit for ever with my toothbrush under the faucet simply because I'm afraid of getting germs in my mouth. I know these things aren't real or logical, but I'm so uncomfortable if I don't do them.
I won't even go into one of the bathrooms in my house since I am convinced it's unclean and 'bad' is the thought I associate with it. I know that there's no horrible anything about it, but I can't let me or my clothes go near it.
It takes me forever to sleep at night since the pajamas I'm wearing must stay perfectly in place or else I have to stand up and 'fix' them. Or if it suddenly becomes bad there's no hope for it and I ' have to' change them, or else I'll lay awake for an even longer amount of time in an anxious fit and even though I know it's outrageous, I'm so tired at the point and know I have things to do in the morning, things I have to take care of, I'll do almost anything to sleep.
I have been generally ignored and disregarded in my family or either mocked or treated poorly for this condition. They tell me I'm playing it up, but they don't understand that this is 'Not' a game. It isn't fun and it rules my life in a way I don't want it to. I have 0% support at home, I'm hoping someone out there has some things to try.
