Obesity Support Group
This community is dedicated to those of us struggling with obesity. Obesity is thought to be a significant risk factor in certain health conditions, leading to increased mortality. Find the support you need by sharing your story, asking questions, and learning from others on how they have coped.
why cant "they" understand its like offering an alcoholic a drink three or more times a day and telling them not to drink...the world is a nutty place...
still
keep trying ...thinking of you :)
As for me, I saw every relative I had die before the age I am now. Worse than that, they died after months of illness........ stroke, cancer, heart failure....... months of being in bed depending on someone else to take care of their every need. That's not the way I want to spend my last years, so have become much more careful about how I manage my health. Yes, I am overweight, and have begun being more serious about that part of the plan. I just see the alternative as too high a price to pay.
Every single woman in my family on my mom's side has had problems with their thyroid gland. Mine was the most severe, and had to be removed in 2006. I'm fortunate I didn't go into heart failure. Since the surgery, even with thyroid replacement, it's been very, very difficult to lose weight. I have to try twice as hard now, for 50% of the results.
Yes...a person CAN do this !!! Unless someone has a gun up your head telling you what to put into your mouth or die,...then it IS A CHOICE !! Now, i NEVER said it was an easy choice.
As for Katishas' comment...i AM an alcoholic and i continue to socialize with people who do drink because they are still my friends and i CHOOSE not to drink. Do i sometimes feel like i would love to drink with them ? HELL YES ! But i CHOOSE not to anymore for my own health reasons. And believe me, i used to be a case of beer and a bottle of Jack every other night man !
I CHOOSE to get up at 0400 and go to my gym even though i don't have to because i don't work.
It's time we start taking accountability for ourselves and remember that ultimately it's up to us to make the right choices for ourselves !
Either get busy livin' or get busy dyin' !
Snippy, you have made a huge accomplishment and seem headed in the right - just keep trying and have a support team in place.
Like i said in another post,..i don't work (disabled vet) and so i'm a dedicated gym rat lol and my gym has a lot of fellow amateur bodybuilders and female figure and fitness competitors and we all talk and share things on facebook and keep each other motivated so that i'm surrounded by fitness and health minded people MOST of the time :)
Our retirement community has started having a coffee klatsch Mon. thru Fri. mornings. Usually all that's there is the coffee, but yesterday someone had provided big, delicious-looking glazed donuts! Someone said to me, "Have a donut!" It would have been so easy to say "Why, thank you, I believe I will!" But instead I said, "No, I don't think so."
I have a friend (now an ex-friend) who is morbidly obese and eats all the wrong foods. Our friendship has soured and I believe it's because she's envious that I've lost 34 lbs. She is diabetic, has heart failure, COPD (from her former smoking), and is constantly in the hospital. She almost died recently. Yet she chooses to eat as if she is "immortal".
Making the right choices IS TOUGH, BUT SO WORTH IT.
