Obesity Support Group
This community is dedicated to those of us struggling with obesity. Obesity is thought to be a significant risk factor in certain health conditions, leading to increased mortality. Find the support you need by sharing your story, asking questions, and learning from others on how they have coped.
But its the family thinking they are supportive when in reality they are just making me feel bad - that grinds my gears as you say
just make u feel like crap and ull eat it and then some any ways
when my mother says things like "I told you not to put on any more weight i have been telling you for years" :( I know she means well and is trying to be encouraging in a weird way but thats why im where i am today because since childhood she has drummed in my head about how fat i was and how it wasnt nice to be overweight and i would never get a husband bla bla bla it was so bad and damaging to me... i love her very much and i know she meant well but that had the reverse effect on me and i would hide and sneak food just because she would not let me have it or she judged me everytime i opened my mouth .. its sad really and i will never do that to my children :( I love my mother but when i think about my childhood i realize it has so much to do with who i am today and how much i keep struggling with my weight just the pressure of trying to fit in even now she still bugs me about it all the time and it hurts and makes it worse rather than better but i dont think she will ever grasp that or ever understand :(
The clothes thing...well, honestly I'll shell out big bucks for clothes if they look good, because it is so hard to find nice looking clothes for big girls. And I treat my clothes like gold (I never dry my shirts, always keep them on hangers, etc).
As for the family thing...my family has a history of obesity, so that really doens't happen in my home. Mom had a RNY-bypass in 2001 (has gained quite a bit back and is just starting to exercise to get some off), and my aunt just had a Lap-band done a year ago and is doing fantastic. My family is really supportive of my efforts as are all of my friends. I really feel bad for you guys who don't have that.
I guess that's something else that grinds my gears then....people who have a hard enough time and the ones who are suppose to be closest to them make it worse, regardless of their 'intentions'.
*sends you all a BIG HUG*
msyaya, i hate it when i hide eating from everyone - I have taken to not eating around people because i know they are judging me when i do, ut this means i have to hide when i do eat, and then i jst feel guilty for having to hide it but if they were more supportive instead of judgemental, I wouldnt have to hide it - this also gets to me.
I like this topic, its helping me et stuff off my chest, thanks leopardfreak

for being my size i get treated much different ... but i still feel like people stare ..
So, I have been trying to have a few more outfits to wear when I am out and about. This is tough, because there aren't very many places that sell big clothes reasonably priced. I have ordered some stuff online, but then it looks different when I get it than it did online or it doesn't fit. I spent quite a bit on an outfit that was supposed to be blue, but when it got hear it is absolutely purple. I look like a giant grape.
I bought a fall jacket recently. It was way too big when it got here, so I sent it back in exchange for a smaller size. It is cold and rainy now, and I am waiting still for a jacket.
And of course in the back of my mind there is still that dream that I will lose weight and then I will feel like I wasted a lot of money on clothes I cannot wear.
Stores like Lane Byrant are could for all ages because the designers have recognized that big women want to be beautiful and in style. Old Navy has incredible clothing at affordable prices which I swear by. Try things online like B & Lu which is more expensive but really beautiful quality clothing. Another fave is Torrid (its more of a rocker edge and trendy styles for younger plus size women)
