I am very out of shape due to some injuries I have had with my back/hip and a broken leg two years ago. Other than four rounds of physical therapy this past year I haven't exercised much. The therapist says I have very weak muscles.
My husband bought me a recumbent exercise bike this past weekend. I used it for about 10 minutes today and my legs hurt the whole time. I know I am out of shape, so I will try to work through it.
Am I alone in this problem? Do other people hurt the whole time while they are starting to exercise? My heart rate was really up and my thigh muscles burned...but I need to lose 40 pounds and get in better shape. I am 50 years old.

I am just getting started exercising and will be on a Recumbent myself. Honestly I think you may need to start at less time and work your way up to the 10mns. If you hurt too much you won't want to do it again. You could even try to do 5mns 2x a day or ride your bike until it starts to hurt and use that as your guide of how many minutes you can do then next week increase the time by 30 seconds or a minute and keep doing that each week if you can. Or even go by distance instead of time. Don't be hard on yourself or demand too much of your body. we have to start somewhere!

Thank you! That is excellent advice. My husband laughed at me for only being able to do the 10 minutes....so I was very frustrated.

Ride when he's not around! You don't need that! I'm proud of you for doing the 10mns cuz it's more than what I accomplished today!

Ravenstar is right wiith her advice. Personally Im into walking on my treadmill or swimming and when I haven't done any for a while I do what Ravenstar has recommended for you in that I start small and build up my time, speed etc again. My hubby told me Im not fit but now it just goes through one ear and out the other ear lol! Do what you can and what you are comfortable with so it becomes a lifestyle change and you will see results. Good luck!

i jogged in place for a whopping 3 mins yesterday =/ then sat down and got up a few mins later and did another 2 mins just so i could say i did five mins. Horrible i know, extremely out of shape. Even though i didnt do too much my calves feel it today. I am hoping if i can shed a little weight exercise will become easier with time.

I am with you there. I have added a minute a day the past three days. Went back to 6 minutes the other day and am up to 8 today. Then I came upstairs and did the rest of my PT stretches and stuff. I have a bad back so I always do my stretches regardless of how lazy I am feeling. I did do 5500 steps on my fitbit today though!
