I'm a BIG fan of the basics ;-) I've tried a few "diets" and gave up quickly for a variety of reasons. Some were too rigid, some just plain boring. Calorie counting is the only thing that seems to be working.
I've been doing this since August 2013. Yes, I have my binge days - some planned and some I just lost control of myself. The good news is that it seems that the longer I do this, the easier it is to get back on track when I do go off the rails.
I like it because nothing is off limits. My own personal requirements are that I try to stay under 2300 mg/day sodium and try to stay under 150 NET carbs/day. I've found that for me if I eat more than that I just will NOT drop any weight - doesn't matter how many calories I eat. Right now I shoot for about 1500 cal/day. I used the calculator at calculator.net to figure out what my calories should be.
I hope the supplements help your sciatica. I really believe too that as you lose weight that will help too. I've heard that for every lb you carry, you add 4 lbs pressure to your joints. My issue is my knees and I know for a fact that what I've lost so far has really helped with the pain.
Give this time to work for you Lillian. Spend some time with your sister figuring out what's working and what isn't. Then you can fix what isn't working.
Every bite is an opportunity for a fresh start. I used to think it was every day...but it's way too easy to have a day go bad and think "well, today is a loss" and just go crazy for the rest of the day.
Wishing you the best! Don't give up on the basics ;-)
