Alcohol in moderation such as a few drinks certainly won't blow you up into a balloon but it definitely does not help in flushing out the system but rather retains even more fluids. For myself I try to drink a gallon of water a day as well as eating foods that help with water retention. I have found for myself that cucumbers and tomatos help a great deal for me.
As for how much alcohol one should drink I think it varies for everyone as some have a different opinion on the matter. For me I seldom drink at all. Although I have read many topics on drinking a glass of wine everyday is excellent for the heart. I have not tried that myself to see how it works for me. But I do believe it may have some positive attributes to it. None the less I wouldn't drink more then a glass of any alcohol on a daily basis.
Also what helps for me as it doesn't bother my stomach is taking IBU when I have pain from the swelling this works well for me as I usually try to find some time during the day to keep my legs elevated for 20 minutes or so. I hope this helps a bit and you feel better soon:)
