Hi, I have a back injury I got while active duty. I tend to get these weird sensations on my skin where it feels like my skin is peeled back and my raw meat is exposed but there is no wound to be seen. I usually get them in small areas that move around usually on my lower extremities. This past weekend I felt it from my right butt cheek and groin all the way down my leg and on my toes. It effected my entire leg, front, back, and top and bottom of my foot as well. It hurt so bad that even my underwear touching it felt as if it was scraping my skin off. I go to the beach about 3 times a week to swim, and when I went this weekend, the sand which is usually soft, felt like is was shredding me and was very painful. I have seen 3 neurologists and they don't know what to make of it. What specialist should I see or what tests should I have done? And is there a medicine to help these kinds of symptoms? Any advice will help.

bluesun, is there a pain clinic in your area? If you have access to one, I would think that a PCP referral would be in order.

I've already been through da pain clinic and had 7 steroid spinal injections, PT, and a whole list of other things. I don't want anymore injections.

I have those same type of sensations due to nerve damage in my back. I started Cymbalta about two weeks ago and I can honestly say that it helps my radiating nerve pain better than anything I have tried. The side effects absolutely suck but they are getting less severe as time goes on. Good luck. Lora

Sounds like neuropathy, they can give you meds for this... neurontin / gabepentin (generic name) is the most common. I'd find a new Neurologist ask your current one to order an MRI and to do nerve damage testing done.

I'd find a new Neurologist or ask your current one to order an MRI and to do nerve damage testing. Most won't go through the bother of doing the actual tests, they will diagnose you based on symptoms.
