Back in 2004 I was diagnosed with mitochondrial muscle disease which I was told was genetic from my mother's side. It caused me to be a little bit weaker and tire more easily than most people, but it was fairly easy to live with. In 2009 I started to have burning, stinging, some numbness and a lump feeling in the ball of my foot that hurt to stand on and then went into the other foot. The burning and stinging has progressed to my face, teeth, nose and other parts of my body. The neurologist thinks this neuropathy is related to my mitochondial muscle disease. I also have hearing loss and severe tinnitus that may all be related.
I've been put on Cymbalta 60mg which hasn't helped much but it may help others so it should be worth a try. It makes my mouth dry which makes me drink lots of water which is a good thing right? I also take gabapentin (generic for Neurotin) 1200mg in three divided doses a day. It has helps some but I need to take a higher dose now since I guess one builds a tolerance to the drug and the pain breaks through. My problem is that it makes me very dopy with blurred vision so I have to choose between that feeling and the pain. The neurologist says that most people tolerate gapaentin quite well so he has a hard time understanding that I don't. My internist gave me a script for Tramadol but it made me feel high so I haven't been using it.
I admit that I have never tolerated drugs very well. In reading the posts about gabapentin(Neurotin) on this site it seems that most do tolerate it well and that many get relief from it. Sorry this is such a long post but I appreciate this opportunity to share. If anyone ever hears or knows of any other treatment for SF neuropathy I'd appreciate hearing about it- btw I am trying a major diet change to see if that can help-what can it hurt?

I am also on neurontin just started it last week. I am just at the beginning as far as diagnosis and medication go. they do not know what has caused my sfn yet. the neurontin also makes me feel like im drugged and dopey. I am nervous about the medications. Ive heard that massage machines help. Good luck if I hear of any other treatments I will keep u posted!
