Scoliosis / Sciatic Nerve surgeries = nerve damage

I'm 80 years old. Six years ago I had both scoliosis and sciatic nerve surgeries within two days. Recouperation was very dark. Relearning to walk, sit, lie down, etc. was difficult. I have numbness in my hips, legs and feet. My hands and fingers continue to deteriorate.


My husband is wonderful, and we have a good life. But, I know I'm failing.


I had a fall 3 years ago, damaging my knees, hands, elbows, shoulders and face. I'm now experiencing severe cramping, shooting pains and lack of abilities throughout my body, but mostly in buttocks, legs and feet. Walking is difficult; my legs don't feel like they are connected to my body. I have upper body sweats from any daytime exertion as well as during the night. I can no longer walk on the treadmill and am now using a peddler. My counts are good after annual physicals. I've self diagnosed my  condition as Neuropathy, but have no backup.


Any suggestions?

I'm sorry to hear about your suffering, mamanana. Have you seen a neurologist? Have you seen a physiotherapist? Are you on any nerve pain medications, such as gabapentin or Lyrica? Have you tried a TENS machine? I use a wheelchair, a power wheelchair, and it works for me. That's great you can use the peddler and that your blood counts are good.
I would like to congratulate you on being 80 years old and being able to be more mobile than I am who is currently bedridden :-( and I'm only 52. My uncle was 83, fell and his spine crumbled because of osteoporosis from chemotherapy. He had severe pain in his back and there is nothing the doctors could do. He was on the highest level morphine the doctor would prescribe. He also took medical marijuana to sleep.
I don't have numbness, just pain and stiffness. I wish I could provide you more suggestions, but at age 80 many medications may cause more side effects than younger individuals. I am very sensitive to medications and it makes it difficult. I wish I could give you more suggestions. I wish you the best.
Getting older isn't fun for any of us. I'm glad we both have supportive husbands.

Thank you for your response. So sorry you are bedridden! No, I'm not seeing any specialists. Following my fall, I went back to my orthopedic surgeon. He ordered physical therapy and Carpel Tunnel surgery (neither helped). Basically he called me a hypochondriac.

After a month on surgery's heavy drugs, I took Meloxicam and Gabapentin, finally realizing they weren't helping. I no longer take them.

Outside of my primary physician, I tend to stay away from doctors. I have specific prescriptions for my physical "hiccups," and at night take Sertraline and Trazodone for nerve pain and to enable sleep, respectively. Again, thank you for caring.
