Oh, Great Spirit
Prayer composed by Chief Yellow Lark, a Blackfoot Indian--

Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives
life to all the world, hear me. I come before you, one of your many children.
I am weak and small. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and
make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset; my ears sharp so I may hear
your voice. Make me wise, so I may learn the things you have taught my people,
the lessons you have hidden under every rock and leaf. I seek strength, not to
be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy--myself.

Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so
whenever life fades, like the fading sunset, my spirit will come to you
without shame.

It's a lovely prayer, but be sure to understand that there was no "Chief Yellow Lark" (who exists purely on new-age and inspirational websites, sometimes as a Blackfoot, sometimes as a Lakota) and this isn't a traditional Indian prayer--it's a fairly recent composition, attributed to various Indian persons to enhance its romantic appeal.

I'm not dissing it at all; it's beautiful. Just be sure to know it's not oratory from a Native speaker.

Such an amazing powerful prayer.. I am Blackfoot Indian myself and my grandmother would pray this prayer with me when I couldn't quiet my mind or couldn't find peace.. I am glad I came across. this, my life has been TURBULENT. . My grandmother passed, and the last conversation we had via phn, she told me to never forget who I was and where I came from. I didn't listen, after her passing, I lost hope, gave up my spirituality and heritage, basically forgot where I came from,.. My randmother has been attempting to communicate to me thru dreams & signs here & there regarding the problems in my life & trying to direct me. crossing this prayer just confirmed it all. With this Hunters Moon today, it's time for "dying" & time for rebirth for myself . I Will never again sabotage my Spirit or forget where I came from and allow it to die.
