It is associated with and caused by "trigger points" (TrPs), sensitive and painful areas between the muscle and fascia. The symptoms can range from referred pain through myofascial trigger points to specific pains in other areas of the body. It may be related...
That reminds me, I should go and put one on now. These muscles are sore again.

I have had pain in the same areas as you - and more. The root cause of my issue was stretched or torn ligaments on the transverse process. These are very deep portions of the spine. I have had prolotherapy to these ligaments and that has helped me considerably.
It's not for everyone, but it has helped me. It took my doctors a very long time to discover that my injury was at that level. IT is not a common area to treat and I have no idea if this info might help you - but it might be an avenue to look into.
Good luck working on those trigger points!
Cdngirl, where exactly is the transverse process? How did you tear the ligaments? One of my doctors does prolotherapy, but I don't think I am ready for that yet. I am trying to straighten, unwind my bones using postural changes, specific exercises, osteopathic manipulation, etc.
Your Transverse Process is part of the spine - if you google it, you should be able to see where it is located. The whole spine has it - it is just a deep part of the spine. I was injured in a water skiing accident - the boar yanked me out with far too much power and that was the beginning of a decade long nightmare.
It is very a very uncommon injury -
I hope you have good luck with the postural work and manipulation etc. That psoas is a mighty monster to tackle - I'm finding life so much nicer with it being a happier muscle.
Good luck!
