Every case is different. My pain is quite severe at times, and never goes away. I have chronic (12 years) myofascial trigger points throughout my back, neck, shoulders, arms and hips, in addition to pain from other disorders including a severe leg injury and Depuytrens Contracture in both hands. My pain is constant but the severity varies through each day, getting worse as I am up and vertical (not lying down). I take pain meds in a titrated schedule which increases during my painful hours and decreases during my less painful hours. In this way, the meds continue to work well enough after many years, because I am not on a constant amount all the time (and thus developing an equally constant tolerance to the drug). Without the pain meds, I might have killed myself years ago. I would have little or no reason to live without them. After I take them, I am myself again. If I go without them, the pain takes over my thoughts and emotions. Medication is the only solution that works for me, and I have tried nearly everything.
