Myofascial Pain Syndrome Support Group
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (or MPS) is a term used to describe one of the conditions characterized by chronic pain. It is associated with and caused by "trigger points" (TrPs), sensitive and painful areas between the muscle and fascia. The symptoms can range from referred pain through myofascial trigger points to specific pains in other areas of the body. It may be related...
I have never had dry needling but i guess i thought it would be more like TP Injections with a syringe but without no medications in it, but im not sure if thats how that works.
I tried acupunture once and i dont know if those tiny needles they use would/could go deep enough. Im just saying, i honestly dont know.
Humm does it take a few days fo it to kick in, i know when my P.M. does TP injections with medication, he tells me it can take up to 5 days berfore it has full effect and sometimes I get a fare up as he has really stirred things up.
Hope you can get your doc to listen to you.
My rule is to never get acupuncture treatments from anyone who is not a doctor of acupuncture. Not that there aren't those out there who get it without all that education and training. Or those with it who just don't get it. But there are too many out there, particularly chiropractors who learn just enough to be trouble.
GRRRR!
This treatment was very effective for me for certain areas but got to the point where it was not helping anymore and only leaving me sore and swollen.
What you had done is not dry needling. Dry needling is when they stick the acupuncture needle into a trigger point and move the needle in and out and all around to try and elicit a "local twitch response" where you can actually feel your muscle jump and "release".
Before I found the dry needling place I am referring to, I had a similar experience with a pain doc who called it dry needling but in hindsight was not at all. He did the exact same thing as you described. I went maybe only 3 times and it did not help. He was supposedly the "myofascial pain specialist" at a large pain institution and in hindsight was a total quack. I remember being in his office, at my absolute low, barely able to move, feeling like my whole body was trapped inside a tight, painful shell practically in tears because I was so so scared and he said "yeah I have myofascial pain too, sometimes my neck hurts on one side when I wake up". I wanted to punch him.
anyway! from my experience (and we have done A LOT of research on dry needling) what you had does not sound like dry needling. Please dont rule out dry needling if this doesnt work because the treatment did help me.

If you have any other or more specific questions please let me know. Like I said, i have a ton of experience and information about this and would be very happy to share.
Just a thought. Personally I hate needles like that and always feel abit invaded. I've had acupuncture a couple of times from someone I really like and trust and even then I was tense and projecting subconcious 'keep those needles away from me' vibes!
