Myofascial Pain Syndrome (or MPS) is a term used to describe one of the conditions characterized by chronic pain. It is associated with and caused by "trigger points" (TrPs), sensitive and painful areas between the muscle and fascia. I have taken it for over a year and a half. It has a very low side effect profile. I beleive it helps. It works on your neurotransmitters to quiet the pain.
Recently, I've been having post-op pain problems and MPS flares. I was prescribed a low, low dose of neurontin (400 mg). I'm going to requst to have it doubled on Monday because it does take the edge off of the muscle pain. I'm still suffering but it's a little better.
Neurontin was orginally made as an anti-convulsant. Many anti-convulsants have anxiety and depression easing properties. It was prescribed for those reasons but it's effectiveness has been surpassed by a new generation of psyche meds. Along the way, it was observed that neurontin had pain easing properties. It is now used to treat a host of chronic pain conditions including migranes, arthritis, etc.
As for a side effect profile, the most common are fatigue and upset stomach. Take the neurontin with food and you'll reduce the likelyhood of that. My body is learning to compensate for the initial fatigue. One more thing, neurontin is a short acting drug, meaning it has a short half-life. It's in and out of your body quickly. If you decide to try it and it doesn't agree with your body, you won't be uncomfortable for more than a few hours.
