Hi all,
I saw my physiatrist today and had my list ready with issues that I wanted to discuss. This doctor comes to the appointment well prepared, having thought about the individual patient ahead of time and has a plan in mind. I have never met a doctor like him. It was quite uncanny, but he had the same issues on his list that I had on mine. High on my priority list was to ask to be referred to aqua therapy and I had the name of the PT facility that I wanted to be sent too. My chiropractor knows the owner and highly recommended the place. He already had this particular clinic showing on his computer screen and said that he had thought that aqua therapy might be better for me at this time. (I was thinking that this guy could read my mind!) He had the referral ready to fax to them.
Then, I mentioned that after reading Chapter 5 (The Power of the MInd) in the book Managing Pain Before it Manages You, I realized that I had some reoccuring negative thoughts that I continuously said when I had a flare-up, so I asked if he could refer me to a psychologist who worked with people in pain. He is a strong believer in the mind-body connection and said that he had noticed that some of my statements indicated that I could use some "talk therapy". He really listens carefully to what his patients are saying and even though I try to put on a happy, positive face, he picked up on some key words that I used. Again, he was prepared and had the referral already written up for an evaluation and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Finally, he asked how the Tramadol worked for me and I said I didn't think it helped, so he asked if I wanted to try Cymbalta. I agreed to take one a day of the lowest dosage, just to see if my stomach could handle it and how my body responded. It was a very productive appointment and I love my doctor. For those of you, and I was one of them for years, who can't find a caring, knowledgeable doctor, please don't give up. There are some out there. Kat

I had to read your post before I did my treatment. What great news. I hope this helps you get to the next stage.
I also know about the negative self talk. I noticed myself doing exactly that one day. Every time it hurt I focused on the pain, talking to myself about how much it hurt, expressed my frustration. So, I spent a day instead focusing on how much it didn't hurt and how much progress I have made and it was amazing to experience the pain disappearing.
Anyone else taking Cymbalta at the lowest dosage? I'm only going to take one a day and start tomorrow.
We'll all be on Oprah yet, with the amazing things this Group has helped us achieve!!!!
You are getting what you want out of your dr because you are knowledagable and proactive. We dont have time to waste with people who dont beleive in us, so it is wonderful to see and hear about someone on the same page.
You ktnow how I feel about the warm water therapy. When I can, i go 4 days a week, and the warm water, laps, makes me feel like my old self and just helps my mood, makes you feel good. I am sure you are going to like it.

I take Savella, which has the norephinephrine and seretonin both in it to help with pain and mood respectively, very similiar to Cymbalta and i dont get side effects.
