have any of you had this while having mds? how serious are we talking here? I am terrified Dad will go down really fast with this. He could not comprehend anything I was saying today.
What part of his body is affected? Shingles can be very painful, but there are medications to help relieve the symptoms. They can give him anti-herpetic drugs like Acyclovir. Also, there is a medication called Gabapentin (Neurotin) that is very good for the pain. It does make you drowsy, but major side effects.
Shingles can show up at anytime. It usually only affects the skin and the nerves in the skin. I don't understand his lack of comprehension- that shouldn't be happening.
I pray the doctors put your father on some medications to get him through this. Sometimes it takes several weeks before it is gone.

Prior to diagnosis I had two episodes of singles. I was treated with
Valtrex. Then approx 4 months I had shingles again. The location was on my left outer thigh. Shooting pain in area and then the outbreak, not large area about the size of quarter or larger, pain was burning & sharp. My Dr advised that if I could go 6 months minimum he wanted me to have the shingles vaccine. It cost approx $200.00
He advised beside having a low immune system due to MDS, stress also causes outbreak.
