Imuran 150/mg daily for the past 5 years -- I was on 60 mg prednisone and now am at 5 mg. Imuran suits me fine -- no side effects like the prednisone. I get my liver enzymes checked every six months to make sure that's okay. I have a greater chance at lymphoma and skin cancer. These days I only get double vision if I am very fatigued.

The prednisone works very quickly, and the Imuran works in 6 months (they say). The tapering off from the prednisone is important -- don't drop too fast.

Don't know what I am going to do in the future -- if I can take this drug for decades. Seems okay for now. ~Joe

I've had the same recent experience. Diagnosed over xmas with generalized Myasthenia Gravis. Started on mestinon and prednisone early this year ... and then a month or so late, Imuran was added .. in three gradual stages, to my present prescription of 150 mg. daily. The Mestinon drug is most specifically targeted to relieve symptoms, doesn't do anything about the root cause ... our immune system over reacting to a perceived but non existent threat. That's where the Prednisone and Imuran come in .. they suppress or settle back down our immune system ... one (Prednisone) much more quickly and powerfully than the other (Imuran). The plan says my neuro doc is to drop the Prednisone by the ed of the year. For the same reason that it acts so quickly, ... its the more powerful of the two drugs, it also has more possible harmful side effects, risk factors, etc.. (I get monthly blood tests ... so they can stay alert for bone loss, other risks, etc.)

Hopefully in a year, we'll stop Prednisone and I'll just need Imuran ... with, at most, a small remaining daily amount of Mestinon, as required for any symptom relief still needed (e.g. fatigue).

Here's hoping you have the same progress for the OMG ... I guess the main thing is settling down our core issue which is our immune system mixed up radar!!
