Boy, can I relate! I, myself, wouldn't even consider such a trip. What about the heat - aren't cruises in warmer environments? But then again - before you decide, I would have a serious sit down talk with all adult participants and tell them what you will need. Someone to take care of you, someone to push your wheelchair (call the cruise line to make sure they have one for you - even airports are iffy these days) - - Tell them what to look for if you are crashing and what to do etc. I took a trip all by myself and encountered one problem after another HOWEVER, I was totally prepared and spoke up. I asked anyone near me for help and people were incredibly kind. Prepare, prepare, prepare.......... hope that helps :) Mary

I can definitely relate! Two years ago, I could take long trips alone and never gave it a second thought. Now, I would be afraid to go far from the house.

I have not really gone anywhere in years.
Took my first trip to a place other than my sons, to Florida.
All went ok but I did end up going back up a bit on prednisone to keep up and We purposely made the trip only 4 days and this is years after my crisises.
Any trip causes me set back.
I would never ever ever go out of the country or on a cruise.

Hi Carley , My son took my wife and I on a cruise in February and I got along ok. If you call the airlines a couple of days ahead of your flight they will have a wheel chair ready for you and wheel you from the ticket counter to the door of the plane , and from the plane to bagage check at no cost . I did tip the one who pushed me around tho. As far as the cruise ship -- it is level walking with many elevaters and places to just stop and sit when you get tired . Which I did often . I don't think I ever made it all the way accross the boat without stopping and recouping for a while. Cruise ships do have a Doc and emergancy ward on board but if they know much about MG is any ones guess , I had a hard time finding a Neurlogist that knew much about it. We didn't leave the boat to go on shore at the stops as I didn't think I could do it . The only real question is if you feel you might go into crisis because you will be a long way away from a US hospital. Hope this helps , Charlie

My biggest concern with flying or taking a cruise is the exposure too other passengers contagious diseases. Too many reports of severe outbreaks of viruses on cruise ships.

At my last MG support group meeting I meet a couple who were retired. He had MG and see had a kidney transplant. Both were stable and enjoying their retirement by traveling across the country, including several cruises. They have never had a problem.

Hi Carley, I can totally relate, I just returned from a 2 week business trip. 14 days coast to coast. The bad news is i was so stressed about going and the "what might happen" that i found myself even sicker worrying about it. Based on the fact that i really had no choice i packed ALL my meds and off I went. Truth is, there were times that i had to do a little "time out" I did ask to move my airplane seat based on a sneezing passenger who was really understanding and since I work in hospital environments I had a few interactions with nurses and my slurry voice that had to be explained, which is awkward but i got through it. In the end, sometimes the stress of thinking of being out of our comfort zone is worse than actually doing it. That having been said, your sister in law, family, really anyone, cannot make the decision .. only you can.. and i understand its hard but in the end.. only you know how you feel and you cant put anyone in your body for them to truly understand how you feel and how things affect you.. My hypertension is controlled by meds, have had it for years, so it doesnt affect many decisions i make, being relatively newly diagnosed and new in my treatment plan .. and frankly stil having more bad days than good with regards to MG, that is what drives all my activity decisions... sometimes the best decision .. is no decision.. wait and make the decision when you are ready.. BUT MAKE IT YOURSELF... dont let anyone else drive it.. best wishes

Just got back from an 8 days cruise and it was okay. Lots of walking and I found myself back in the room no later than 6PM and into bed. My wife could go to shows and other events with the other couple and it did great to not make me feel guilty. We had scheduled our 35 anniversary cruise last year and I had a cruise about a month before it and the Neuro made me cancel it saying that if I went into crisis the ship could not help and by the time I got help I would be deceased. But this year I was much better and he let me go.

I have been on a 3 day cruise and long haul flights since I have been diagnosed with MG. I use a wheelchair at the airport which really helps. I only travel when I am feeling good.
