Myasthenia Gravis Support Group
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Although myasthenia gravis may affect any voluntary muscle, muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, and...
Hopefully someone else will chime in and give you the correct information as I don't recall the time periods you are supposed to be off of mestinon.
You should stop your Mestinon a good 4 days or as sooner if you can before the test. Some say longer and some say shorter
As mentioned I would avoid all sources of caffeine, tea, soda, chocolate & coffee. Avoid other stimulants that can be found in certain medications, I would avoid Pseudoephedrine which can be found in various cold medications.
To just be safe avoid the food family called nightshades which include
Potatoes, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, and cayenne peppers are classified as nightshade foods. A particular group of substances in these foods, called alkaloids, can impact nerve-muscle function
Within these food types the alkaloids can also affect the NMJ which might affect the SFEMG test.
The day before the test give both of your arms, forearms and hands a good workout, this will assure that the muscle being tested is being presented somewhat tired, this helps the quality of the data during the test. Be sure to be good and warm before you go in for the test.
Joe
I read your post about your SFEMG experience as soon as I got home yesterday. Thanks for the info
Thanks Tim and limpnoodle for your help as well.
oh and no one told me about stopping the Mestonin.
Everyone's advice is right on target.
I wish I'd known better, way back when.
If I were to be tested with SFEMG today?
The waves on the screen - would drop off the bottom of the screen.
I just found the Neuro's notes, from my SFEMG in August, 2007.
"Conclusions:
No myasthenia gravis.
Muscle cramps benign, not due to MG.
Tingling-sensation is probably due to anxiety.
Repeat AChR tests, blood test is probably false positive.''
See what you run into?
- Ross
Refrain from Mestinon, prior to testing, to the best of your ability.
I did stop the Mestinon yesterday and called my the doctors office today. They called back to say you guys are right "stop the Mestinon."
If it weren't for you guys I would not have known.
I had mine today as I have a new neuro and she wanted to be sure.
Sadly ... I am happy to report the test was abnormal. Yippe. So continue on the mg path".. At least finally a positive test . Lol
