My 72 year old dad has MG and his symptoms, when they flare up, are only from the neck up. He loses his ability to swallow and his eye muscle movement becomes impaired. In Feb 2016 they started him on Rituxan. The first installment was an IV infusion, once a week for 4 weeks. He won't get it again for another 6 months in Sept 2016. He's also down to PLEX (plasmapheresis) every other week and trying to wean off that to see if the Rituxan can carry him 100% without crashing into MG crisis again. He's down to 40mg daily of steroid. His MG seems to be under control, which is great, but now his hemoglobin levels are down to near 7 (under 7 and they will give you a couple bags of new blood at the hospital....a "transfusion"). He has a host of doctors now, a general doc, a neurologist, a hematologist, and starting this friday, a cardiologist. None of them will point blank say that the Rituxan is the cause of his low iron levels. But it makes sense that since Rituxan gets into your bone marrow to suppress your immune system to throttle back the MG, that it would dampen the marrow's ability to generate hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to all the body's muscles. This results in severe fatigue. He is on slow release iron tablets, monthly vit B12 shots and daily vit B12 tablets. Still his hemoglobin sits between 7 and 8, when it should be 11 to 13. Is there anyone out there also on Rituxan that is having anemia issues? Thanks for any feedback!
