No hair loss, but on one of the immunosuppressants, my hair stopped growing. My poor hairdresser was freaking out. It was prograf or immuran. I am on cellcept now and my hair and nails grow too fast!!

Me! I think it is the prednisone. I shed like a dog. My hair dresser said that Biotin-sp will help with hair loss. I haven't looked it up yet to see if I can take it with all of the other medicines that I take. My hair is growing - it is just thin, especially up on top. Barbel

I too lost probably half to two-thirds of my hair over six months or so. The same as yours, not in patches, plus I hardly ever had to shave my legs and armpits during that time. I also am blaming the prednisone (I also stopped getting my period and had slightly more fine hair on my face for about that time, so I'm guessing it's a hormone problem). It could also have been the stress and the fact that I didn't get enough to eat due to chewing and swallowing problems, but I think the Prednisone played a big part. I'm on a lower dose now (20mg every other day) and the hair on my body seems to be growing normally again. I am no longer losing huge amounts of hair from my scalp, though it hasn't yet grown back to it's former thickness. Hopefully it will though. Right, it's always something: in case we aren't self-conscious enough about moon face and prednisone-induced weight gain...

Like Debbie, my hair and nails now grow quickly but like the rest of me it lacks strength. Seems to me that I have excessive hair loss, eyelashes & brows also. I have my thyroid checked regularly and is "normal" so long as I continue with synthroid.
I'm not on prednisone. Cellcept and Mestinon only.

Hair loss with medication is difficult to sift through. My PCP says it is one of the most difficult problems (he sends his to the dermatologist :-) ) I certainly have thinning to the point that my thick, normally wavy hair is curly. My eyelashes and eyebrows are growing back in since I quit holding my eyes closed with my fists at night, better MG control. b.

My neuro said it was the steroids.

When I was on cellcept- I had a lot of hair loss. On just prednisone and mestinon now and my hair is thin and comes out a lot when I brush - but not a HUGE amt like on cell cept. Still there though. I HATE the little thin stuff that grows back and is really short - it always frizzes up and I never know what to do with it.

I'm shedding so much that my husband has to sweep the bathroom floor daily to get up the excess hair. Also, when he cleans out the dryer lint trap it is mostly hair. I have multiple things working against me. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and I take both Prednisone AND Cellcept. Hair loss is listed as side effects for both of those medications. Oddly though, I have more facial hair that grows really fast but I can go months without shaving my legs or arm pits. My hair use to be super thick and difficult to find a rubber band that was strong enough to hold it all back. I am happy to report that my eyebrows and lashes are just as full and thick as ever. Yay, for the small gifts. There really is always something.

Since I started using supplemental Testosterone...hair is a real problem...too much here, not enough there...I know, too much information!

My tumor squeezed out the Gonadotrophic cells and I don't produce much testosterone of my own as a result. Wherever you apply this gel, it's like fertilizer on a yard...tada!...you have hair.

Yuck.

So does anyone know why this happens??

I read a theory somewhere about altered levels of insulin/blood sugar possibly being a cause for hairloss. I know I had a terrible case of hairloss whilst on some other meds and I remember my blood sugar also doing totally crazy things during that same period.

It's hard to say exactly why.

In my case, testosterone plays a big part in it. With the feedback mechanisms of the "homeostatic" mechanism of the thalamus and hypothalamus, it may be hard to say exactly what mechanisms come into play.

I did not have Psoriasis until I started taking this medication. My grandfather had a head full of hair and my dad had very little. It could go either way with me, from a genetic standpoint, but I'm a male and it's expected that I will turn ugly, fat and be bald...LOL!

People tell me I have a good point, but it's not about conversation, it's about my head.

I've noticed more then ever lately my hair is thinning out. I've been on imuran for 6 months and prednsione for 7. I also have been noticing on top of my hair on my head thinning out, pieces of my eye brow goes missing. Finally the piece that went missing will grow back and then another part will go missing! No winning! Seriously.

Thanks for sharing everyone, but sorry that so many of you have the same problem. Yes to thinning eyebrows and longer nails too!
