Chiropractor and diet??

Hello all, hope everyone is well. I have a question/story. I go to a chiropractor that is a "Maximized Living" clinic. They promote nutrition (similar to Paleo diet), exercise, stress reduction, and of course regular spine adjustments. My neck and back are a hot mess so that is why I started going. They have always tried to push the diet and they truly believe that with correcting the spine and eating right can pretty much heal anything. Well they had no idea what MG even was so I never payed attention to their theory " no medications, eat only what God has made, and so forth". Well I go for an adjustment and pick up a Maximized Living magazine and start reading an article. Turns out it was about a nun who was diagnosed with MG and ended up with a port for constant IVIG infusions and was on 37 medications. Her quality of life went from being an active school teacher and missionary to barely making it to prayer times at the convent. Her friend recommended a Maximized Living Chiro and as a last resort she went. So after a few months of eating right and adjustments as well as some exercise she is in remission! Off all of the meds and no more IVIG. I was just wondering what your thoughts on this were?? Is it a sign from God trying to tell me which direction to go?

A good balanced diet, prepared at home and rich in fresh fruit and vegetables has to be healthy. With regard to spinal adjustments being a panacea for all ills then I'm skeptical. Good posture will certain protect your going and reduce aches and pains - but fix diseases such as MG? Unlikely. Indeed, in some cases chiro adjustments can be positively dangerous. I have CSM and my doctors have warned me that spinal adjustments to my neck would likely render me paralysed.

As an aside, an interesting area of new research is into the role of microbes / pathogens in auto-immune disease. New research suggests that too clean an environment while growing up contributes to an over active immune system that is the cause of MS, MG etc.

A full on paleo diet did not keep me from a diagnosis of MG, sadly I think there is no miracle cure. It will be a combination of many many things... i will say that a paleo diet is a great way for people like us who are forced to be less active to control weight gain from inactivity. i just started prednisone so i will let you know if it helps me avoid weight gain from the drugs as my dosage goes up...I doubt it...best of luck!

Eating a healthy diet and taking good care of your body is never a bad thing; one thing my neuro keeps telling me is that staying as otherwise healthy as possible raises my chances of keeping MG in check. However, I think it's important to be rational; hope needs to be based on reality, not on wild claims that eating like a caveman will somehow cure all! I have done it all in terms of diet, supplements, yoga, juicing, etc., and I have not really noticed any substantive life changes. Mestinon, rest, steroids, and adopting a calm outlook on life are the things that have helped me the most.
