Myasthenia Gravis Support Group
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. Thanks for the warning about supplements

Most of us could use some extra Vitamin D although 10 minutes a day uncovered by sunscreen in the sun will provide most of that. For those on immunosuppressants, (due to increased risk of skin cancer), even 10 minutes a day may not be recommended, so therefore supplements.
Calcium we need like everyone else, but can only absorb about 600 mg at a time. It is best to get most of that from food and only supplement if you cannot get your daily allowance. Too much calcium in the diet (and supplements) is being linked to stones, fractures, and heart attacks. If you ingest calcium with food, you get some magnesium, probably enough to absorb the calcium. If your serum magnesium is low then supplements would be indicated, but that must be extremely rare.
We are talking bones here, mostly because we have to take steroids and like everything else our MG complicates the treatment of the treatment. I am going to talk to my doctor Monday about what to do since I do have osteoporosis of the spine (he probably will want me on the bone drug that does in my tummy once a week).
Without the MG drugs, I think I would do exactly as Ann and get what I need from food (nuts are good for us, too). However, I don't eat enough to get a full daily allowance, especially when I need extra for problems caused by the drugs I have to take (which I do not like, but have to take them anyway).
I hope that is helpful and not just confusing. MG is a difficult condition to navigate. b.
What I have been taught is that you only absorb about 600 mg at a time, so no need to take more than that in each dose. If you take it with food you probably get enough magnesium. Many calcium preparations come with magnesium, but we may get into trouble with weakness with those. ( or not, it is MG after all ) b.
