I like your sense of humor Orsova. MS looks like all kinds of things. It comes to us in many differant ways. We don't get to pick a size or shape, etc. We just take it as it comes. I was dx in 2006 and people who have not seen me in a long time will ask me why I have a cane? what happened? I tell them........."oh I have MS". They look at me like I have 3 heads and don't know what to say. Either they ask me about it, or they are at a loss for words and say nothing.

I love it!! I cant tell you how many times i have heard that. and the other quote i love is, "Well, you look good!" Yeah, we are all faking this for the attention. Ask the next person that says that to you, "Yes, i know that i dont look like i have ms and you dont look as stupid as you really are!

Tell them that you appreciate the compliment, that "while you may have MS, MS doesn't have you -- at least not yet."

And then maybe tell them that people with MS look just like the rest of the world, at least until the disability fully takes hold. And that most MS'ers just want people to understand that they are still a part of the world but might get tired easier, walk a little funnier, or just need a little bit of a break to go their way now and then.

Funny. That's what most of us need, is it not?

Just say that not only do I not look like I have MS, I also do not look like a Psychological Cereal Killer out trolling for my next victim, smile, look past them and walk away seven steps and turn and look back for just a second.

Give it time. You will come to look like you have MS. Enjoy/appreciate/celebrate the days of walking (upright).

Well, what I wanna do when I'm told that I don't look like I have MS is grab my crotch, thrust my hips forward and say "How bout now?" but I'd prolly get arrested. lol

I guess I'm the oddball, but I would relish being told that I don't look like anything is wrong w/ me .... it would be a definite improvement over what is so obviously apparent about my current status ... honest to pete, if I could sneak it past people that nothing's wrong, I would be thanking my lucky stars ...

My families reaction was ...MS people are not fat. Well, I am. Somedays I have a walker. Some days my handi dandy wheelchair, and some really great days I can do it myself. I have drop foot a lot.

A friend I have that has stood with me through it all...Told a family member...'You forget so soon...from 1978 till IV stroids in 1992 she weighed 92 lbs...was dx's with lupus to RA to being insane...Then the Roids took over and yes, she is fat...but she still has MS????' I gotta love her she is a keeper.

I think I would just stick my tongue out now and say pooh on you!!!!!LOL

It is a double edged sword....

There are days in which there is almost nothing wrong and people give me the sympathy card, and are all like, "are you sure you are ok?"

Then there are days in which everything is wrong, and then people tell me, "You don't look like you have MS." Or the "I had no clue." or the ever classic, "you look so good." or "you are not sick!"

I am reminded of the movie Addams family when the family is getting ready to go trick or treating and go play wake the dead. Wednesday comes up without a costume and says.... "I am a homocidal maniac, they dress like everyone else..."

I have had the experience of a so-called friend making a snide comment after I'd walked about five feet to her car w/out her usual assistance (as if she'd caught me out!) ~ when I tried to explain that there are the rare occasions that everything works like it should & that's undoubtedly the 'remitting' part of RRMS, she kept looking at me sideways & all skeptical-like ... we've since parted company, but now I think back 'what a bitch!'

Another friend just boohooed when I said 'look ma, no hands!' as I was walking the route between my kitchen & living room w/out doing the wall-crawl for a change ...

Would you know how I'd look if I told you I had Hodgkins Lymphoma or a myriad of other conditons, that I, personally, have no idea how a person would look? Maybe they are trying to complement, or maybe it is a lead-up for a follow up explanation. There is a lot that a lot of people (including you and me) do not know. I hope that does not make me stupid. I do not want people walking on eggshells around me, afraid to say something, for fear I will think them ignorant or stupid. If it really matters, carry a syringe and when someone asks you that, thank them for the reminder, pull out the syringe and give yourself a shot, preferably on a vein, so it will bleed, and don't forget to say OUCH! ;o)
