I would recommend getting to talk with your primary Dr. yes. Maybe THEY would get you the steroid mass dose to help stop and or slow the healing of this relapse that has been hanging over you.
They may also be able to get you in touch with another neuro who could set you up with the fast (although spooky/ unpleasant) mass 3 day treatment of 25 50mg pills a day of Prednisone each day.

That is WHY I went to the new neuro myself, my general dr. wouldn't prescribe the mass dose of prednisones.

Will your insurance let you find a new neuro; one that specializes in MS until your other doctor returns to work? I've been on Solumedrol (for 3 days not 5) 2x's and it's helped me recover from my relapses. I'm not sure what you're up against, but if it prevents you from functioning then you should seek medical advise. Steroids are horrible for your body, but it was the lesser of all evils for me. If this relapse is affecting your daily way of life, then you should seek medical assistance. It sounds like it is. Like suggested, see if you can find another neuro, if not on a permanent basis. Someone needs to see you and treat your symptoms, whether it be your primary or not. Good luck.

Please find a MS neuro specialist. It is important to have one. Or at least see an alternative doctor that someone recommends.

Thanks everyone for your advice. It helps a lot :) my relapse seems to be shifting and each day there seems to be something different, but a constant sort of feeling that it is there. I have been apprehensive about taking steroids because I've heard that it isn't so great for your body - what do you think? I will see my family doctor next week.

I can understand your reluctance to go on steroids. Your comment "my relapse seems to be shifting and each day there seems to be something different, but a constant sort of feeling that it is there", has me worried that maybe you are suffering a mix of different ms systems & maybe not a full blown "ms attack/flare up". Generally for it to be a ms attack it is new symptoms or worsening ones that last at least 24-48 hours, or new one's that really affect badly "like sudden paralysis of limbs"
I hope you have gone to your primary Dr & hopefully got a refferal to a different ms neurologist till yours comes back.

Good luck with this. Let us know what happens. You should get help if you are having a relapse. I wouldn't recommend steroids myself because of the long term effects.

But if you aren't on a therapy drug of some kind, you are more likely to have a relapse. And most neurologists don't go on sick leave and leave no one to replace them. Please call up and get another referral. Best of luck to you.

Long term steroid use is not good for your body, but the short term...5 day massive dose through iv to stop an attack is not the long term use that is not good. They are two entirely different things. The IV steroids stopped both of my two attacks and I suffered no long term affects. Hope this helps.

Thanks! This really helps. Today, I woke up and felt even worse, so I think the relapse is continuing. I see my family doctor Friday so i will ask him. Unfortunately, I heard this week that my neurologist isn't expected to return, so hopefully I can find someone new soon.
