I would just like something to put me out for some uninterrupted sleep. Over the counter if possible. With work and ms it's like a battle to sleep.

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Other people swear by meditation & soothing music too.
Depends what is stopping you sleepling.
Mine was pain & once I started using pain patches it helped. Also was getting up to the toilet several times a night, have a catheter now so that solved that problem.
The other thing I got tested for was sleep apnoe & I have it. Using the machine has made HUGE difference & sometimes I even sleep right through the night. As you can see it can be a combination of factors stopping/interrupting sleep.
Hope something here helps you, or please post more details on what you think is stopping you from sleeping too.
You know about the over the counter stuff already, and have probably tried to no avail, the Tylenol PM, etc., that's why you posted...It's a trial and error thing you talk about with your doctor.
Hey off topic: I moved from CT to Florida about 4 months ago. You anywhere near NH? I was from No. haven. Man, you're cold right now. 8^D
Ambien works for me and it does not make me do crazy things or have other stuff. But after a while it does not work as well. I do wake up rested but it has a short half life.
I find that I add Zantaflex and tylenol PM and that gets me the needed 7-8 hours sleep.
I have heard that melatonin and valerian are not good for auto-immune diseases so I would definitely check with your doc before taking them.
Zantaflex is a muscle relaxer that really makes you sleep even better than Ambien.
Here is the thing serotonin (a feel good hormone) is converted into melatonin eventually. So you want to bring this level up. You can do so by doing things like getting out into the sun where your eyes dilate and increase the this level. You can get light boxes in the winter months to do this if you live in the north (look up Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD - these light boxes do help). If you eat turkey (has tryptophan) and brown rice together this gives your body what it needs to make these compounds.
Write down all your issues, lists of tomorrow's to-do's so you are not constantly thinking about them. Do not exercise right before bed because it gives off endorphines that keep you up. As others have said use calming music in a DARK room to help.
Best wishes on a good night's sleep

1.) You are not getting enough oxygen..if this is the case a sleep study and possibly a C-pap may help.
2.) You have to use the restroom frequently ..if this is the case consult a doctor about spasticity medication. Ask about not drinking 2 hours beforehand and possibility of a cath if nothing else works.
3.) Stress - you need to deal with what is causing the stress
4.) Low hormones (ie melatonin) - see my above reply
