Spacisity is when a muscle recieves commands to both contract & expand at same time it makes muscles stiff.
I had developed "robot like walking" to the point that some high school kids cruising by when I was walking around the block ..."Stop drinking you alcoholic"
In morning first thing I reached for was tylenol, then waited 20 minutes before I got up.
During a routine physical with new primary doc, she bent my leg and sai that I walk much more spastically than my legs are?
I didn't think any thing of it. So for 100 feet, I don't walk spactically then it starts. But I'm walking. I didn't worry about it.
Then my doc switched me from Betaseron to Tysabri. After 2 days I noticed I wasn't sore all the time. I could get up in morning and not get Tylenol first. That Robt like walking disappeared.
I told neuro when I saw her this Tysabri is great it fixed my spsticity. I was always sore before. She did not think it was from Tysabri, she thought it was from stopping betaseron, not spasicity.
I think my muscles were sore so when I walked I tried to flex muscles as little as possible & that resulted in that Robot like walk.
I never complained of muscle soreness, I guess I just thought that was normal MS. I'm unlucky enough to have MS, I've gotta get used to this muscle soreness. It's just a part of the MS package.
Then I thought about what my new primary doc had said, my walking was much more spastic then my leg indicated when she bent it.
For me, I think I misinterpreted muscle soreness for spactisty. I didn't know what it was? My new primary gave me a hint I should have picked up on. When my leg was relaxed, it bent very easily. Passive movement....where I did not flex muscles to move it.
That should have tipped me off, to the fact that it wasn't spactic. It was muscle soreness when walking.
The doc thinks I developed that as a side affect to Betaseron, 2 years after I started beta. I had no side affects at all from it before - so I just didn't expect to develop any on after using it for 2 years. But I agree with her, I think that is what happened.
So for your spastic question, given what I have just went through. I would have to ask is your leg stiff on passive movement? Or does it just stiffen up when you use it?
But I still don't know what it is by experience, I haven't experienced
it yet. I hope not to for a long time...So I defer to anyone else who has lived with it. I could be all wet about that passive movement thing.
Mine reminds me of the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz -- takes me a while to get moving from the stiffness, for sure.
Wish I had an oil can like he had. :)
for me it happens at random times . i could be walking and have it hit, or standing and then try to start walking.
my legs feel like tree trunks, like they are not jointed, and very heavy to move, like i'm dragging them through sand, or tar.
i used to think that spasticity was twitching, so i never thought i had this symptom.
i'm going to try baclofen
