I have painful spams in my left hand.
The spasms seems to be there all of the time causing pain but sometimes the pinky & ring finger stiffen up & spasm for 10 secs to 3 min's. Or the spasm for short time over & over again.
Not sure if this has something to do with working my hand more as I have switched over to left hand drive on my wheel chair.
I saw my MS doc today & he said both types of spasms are just joys of MS.
He said for the spasms that happen over & over again there is a pill that can help.
One I am allergic to the other makes me crazy so I am SOL.

Anyone who suffers from the spasms that happen over & over again is there anything you do that helps? (besides med's)

Has anyone tried self massage or a vibrating massager?

Has anyone tried ice or heat? Does it help or hurt one better then the other??

I am on a lot of muscle relaxers but the hands still spasm on me. I use a heating pad, wrap my hand in it. It helps. If only while I have my hand in it, but it at least helps.

I sometimes will have someone massage it, but they never do it right. :P So I kinda massage it myself but both hands spasm so it makes the other one worse.

My lefts hand is slowly curling up and atrophying. A brace at night was suggested as was lying my palm flat as much as possible. Hand massage helps temporarily. I am supposed to squeeze this silly putty stuff. If I do it too much - a lot of cramping.

Are you a candidate for Botox? This happens due spasticity and you want to avoid a contracture.

If you have a hair stylist come in ask if she does manicures? She would be a good one to get a hand massage thru.

The spasm meds don't help this,

Hi I'm sorry that you have to endure so much !

This may not be of any help and I know you said you can't take the 2 pills but want to mention and hope that valium was not one of them howeverit did help my spasms !

I went to the ER for servere left side weakness they did a workup on stroke it was neg. they did a test to chk for a pinched nerve NEG. They did a MRI and orderd Valium and it helped ! Hosp. Neuro said it was spastic gave me 30 to go home on and I now wish I had them because it's all back & I'm w/o relief !

I do want to tell you I had my husband go up to the local Pharm. and pick up ( Absorbine Jr.) it is a rapid relief liquid it by no means is a cure all and I do have painfull spasms that drive me crazy and they hurt ! I have been useing it and it does ease the tention alittle and for the price It's worth it , about 11 dolllars for 4 fl oz ...
