My mom sells insurance and is a financial adviser. She got me investing $50 a month to lock away just in case and it has been very useful. I have $3000 locked away for 5 years and $1000 in an emergency fund that I can access within 2 days in case I need it. The emergency funds were very useful when I was first diagnosed. My parents paid my rent for two months but after that I didn't want to depend on them any more if I could avoid it and I used my savings to pay rent, bills, groceries etc.

Now I'm interested in looking into insurance. My mom said I'm probably never going to be eligible for life insurance because I do have a chronic disease, I just have to hope for a job that offers insurance.

I am curious to hear if anyone was able to buy insurance after their diagnosis?

No, I was un-insurable. I was just lucky that I bought a small life policy a few months before my dx.

Wishfull thinking. My friend is an insurance sales man and he says that we as MS people are to high of a risk.
Tried, last year and was rejected.

I have been told I could possibly piggy-back onto my husbands life insurance policy if I ever get married. Has anyone had any success with this?

not heard of that? both my husband and i were insured with the same company and i was turned down for additional life coverage. glad i bought some early on, for sure. worth asking about though!

I work for the federal government and they offer group life and medical. As a group they have to cover every employee and family member. There are more fed jobs than you know. Look them up on USA JOBS. Their unions also offer life ins. I have a $100,000.00 term policy for $47.00 every 3 months, just through union secure alone and the life ins through blue cross is only $108.00 every 2 weeks for the family plan and it covers betaseron for $35.00 a month. There's also a long term disability policy for $90.00 a month.

I actually got a policy after dx and with diabetes also. I pay 76.00 for 25,000 life insurance policy. Something better than nothing. LOL

I know your chances of getting life insurance increase the longer you are in remission. I was told after being diagnosed with crohn's disease that I would be able to get life insurance IF I went into remission for 5+ years. Unfortunately I wasn't thinking about insurance when I was 17 and neither was my mom.

I wonder if it is the same with MS... the longer your disease is inactive... the higher your chances of getting insurance are? Unfortunately I'm sure people who aren't having issues currently do not check the message board.

I got life insurance when in rrms stage from Jackson National Life Insurance Company about 18 years ago. I believe the premium was pretty reasonable. Good question. Good luck.
