Hi, I just had a brain MRI and the Doctor saw 4 lesions. I asked what they could possibly be and he said MS. My question is....how many lesions is a lot or little? Is 4 bad? I go back to have a MRI with contrast next week. Going through lots of leg, back, arm and hand pain with weakness in my left arm and numbness and tingling in my left foot. I also have sunburn like pain on the top of my thighs, dizzy spells, fatigue and brain fog. Help.

My doctor strongly feels i have MS. I have about a dozen leasions. But he was mostly concern not with quantity but their location around nerve axons. That and dawson fingers shape. So some lesions mught be unrelated to MS. It is their location that is most important. At least that is what i have gathered. Be well.

From my understanding quanity doesn't matter. I've heard of people who had hundreds of lesions and very few symptoms, while others that had only one or two were in a wheelchair.

Like Bijoux said, it is the location that seems to matter most.

Mine are tiny few and scattered. Was told I shouldn't have symptoms based on their location.. I have ALL MS symptoms, struggle daily, and had many flares over the past year despite starting new treatment(I'm now on my 2nd treatment).. So like Lisa said, it doesn't matter much.. MS is MS.. Hopefully, you will be like those who have few flares or symptoms. We're all here for you !

As stated the number of lesions don't matter. I myself I'm a year in with this MS. I was told I have 7 lesions on my brain. I'm shocked that the Dr didn't have your first MRI done with and without contrast. Best of Luck

also remember some lesions are not revealed by the MRI they are deep down inside so to speak. Other lesions might be in a cervical spine region (motor functions) and MRI on a spine is NOT routinely performed. In fact my neuro said NO when i asked.

So far I have had one very very small lesion on my brain...(not seen by the first person who read the MRI), one the size of a pencil lead on my neck...(C-spine), which left me in a wheelchair for 3 months in 1996, and one the size of a vertebrae on my thorasic spine that I have now, which I am going into remission from now. I lost mostly feeling with the last (largest) lesion. Yes, it is my understanding that how many do not matter. It is all..(as to what losses a person faces) location location location.

Thank you everyone! MsRee......they did the MRI without contrast and then after laying on my back for 40 min he then noticed that he was supposed to do it with contrast also, I couldn't lay there any longer, my back hurt so bad, so we are going to do it next Thursday. Do they always do a lumbar puncture? I'm terrified to have one of those done.
