One thing that you really must do if you suspect that you may have multiple sclerosis, is to get your financial house in order immediately, at once and without delay. Ensure that you have adequate Health, Disability and Life Insurance prior to turning up for any examinations or tests. If any health professional tips you off that he/she suspects MS, request that no mention is made of this in any notes until you have sorted out the insurance issues. What MS treatments there are, are expensive and if you are forced out of the workplace you will need a source of income. Once a diagnosis is made it will be too late.

No, luckily my house was in order before my dx.

It just seems that there are alot of folks here lately tht have no dx yet, and I wanted to warn them of the financial "symptoms" of MS.

Really good point, Itchy! I disclosed my condition to my employer and was forced out of work within a few months. I really loved my job, but the management sucked! They didn't show any patience or compassion. As soon as I started to request really simple job accommodations, I was out the door so fast, they left me spinning.

Amen! My mom sells life insurance (in Canada...) and is a financial planner as well. At 16 I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and was told from that point on, I will never be insurable. The only way I will be able to get insurance is if I can piggyback onto a future spouse insurance or if it is offered through my place of work.

Unfortunately at 16 we were not concerned about me having insurance, so I started saving. I now have investments that I have been putting $50 a month into since I was 18 and more when I could. It's not much, but it emergency money for when MS hits and I can't work.

Actually I was able to get a policy after diagnosis plus I have diabetes. However i pay 63.00 a month for it. Have diabetes as well so I had little options regarding life insurance etc.

Yeah the long term disability is something I wish I would have gotten in order before the diagnosis. My husband and I got married 6months after dx. What house? lol.

My job is pretty good about it right now and my insurance is good too. So I just take it one day at a time and will continue to work as long as I can.
