The following was taken from a MS website and should be understood by all that frequent this Daily Strength MS Group, especially if you are just starting out to going down the diagnosis road.
"IMPORTANT: One thing that you really must do if you suspect that you may have multiple sclerosis, is to get your financial house in order immediately, at once and without delay. Ensure that you have adequate Health, Disability and Life Insurance prior to turning up for any examinations or tests. If any health professional tips you off that he/she suspects MS, request that no mention is made of this in any notes until you have sorted out the insurance issues. What MS treatments there are, are expensive and if you are forced out of the workplace you will need a source of income. Once a diagnosis is made it will be too late."

No truer words were every spoken. I waited and waited before signing up for long term care insurance before I was diagnosed and then the deadline was 3 days after my diagnosis and they gave me a flat out NO! But my husband has health insurance and they have to take me as long as it is a BC/BS plan wherever he goes and I kept my life insurance policy from my job as it was not term but whole and pay each month but as for long term - kaput. Guess when it is time it is time for me!

Another important thing to think about is to contact your local MS Society, There are many ways they can & do help. Renovations as well as many mobility aids may be had & often for nothing.

I would imagine that such a heads up would be too late for perhaps 99% of those who read it here. And in this economy, perhaps it is closer to 100%. It is entirely true however, "Once a diagnosis is made it will be too late."

I'm afraid you are right FichenDich, but if this message of warning could be helpful to one or two people then it was a helpful post. I wish someone had forewarned me.

Also, for US residents, you need to educate yourself on how SSDI works. My husband and I learned about it too late. He had stopped working to go back to school, so already was low on work credits. Now he might not be able to get SSDI at all. We have had to turn to a lawyer in hopes he might still be able to get it.
