I am so sorry that your mom's response was so negative. All I can say is take care of yourself during this time. I am sure you were both feeling very overwhelmed.

Hi hon, it sounds like she is lashing out on you because she does not understand it and could be in denile. It happened with my mother, she said oh no you are fine, just eat right and exercise. I think they are frightened of the truth and cannot accept it right now. Give them time. I gave my mom a book called MS for dummies. It is a really good book. She is not angry at you hon, she is probably anger at this terrible disease. Give it time for everyone to accept it. I haven't even accepted mine. Take care and big hugs, Maggie

She's actually in the mindset that I'm going to be in a wheelchair in a week as opposed to years.

The bigger issue is that we have control issues. She's very controlling and selfish. This isn't about her. It's my illness.

i don't know what's worse. A family with bigger fears than your own or one telling you that this doesn't change a thing and everything is going swimmingly. My mom is convinced that my first and only attack (hasn't even been 3 weeks) was a one time thing and then it's going to clear up and i'll be perfectly healthy. I think i'd rather have her saying i'm gonna be handing in my feet for a set of wheels. But you never know until you experience it personally. We just want to be understood.

I don't know about you but when the doctor gave my diagnosis, I was a little relieved to know my symptoms had a name finally, instead of looking like a hypochondriac. Some people cry when the doctor tells them. Now if he said I had cancer or AIDS, I would have been crying like a baby.

I am so sorry about your mom's reaction. I am in the reverse situation. My son which is close to your age is the controlling person. When I first got sick and disabled, he told me to get off my lazy butt and work. Even when hospitalized he thought I was faking it. And now he knows it is MS after all these years, he is scared of what will happen to me when he moves out.

I love him but I can't stand him controlling my life. He told me he is moving out in June. I was going to kick him out sooner but my grandson needs stability. And I willing to wait.

I believe your mom will come around and I believe my son will too. It takes time to adjust. Do take care of yourself as you adjust to your feelings about this. Hugs, Bunni

When my Dr. told me it was most likely MS, I was surprised. But I didn't freak out. I have a remarkably realistic attitude about it. That was in November. Today was the definitive "yes, you have MS" doctor visit. Went in to talk to my Dr. alone, so we could make decisions together. I told Dr. that Mom needed reassurance. Mom came in, and things went down hill from there. I absolutely never get angry. Today was so strange, because I never get so unhinged!
