Val
I'm out today trying to be seen by the Minute Clinic here! I'm having to wait!
I'm dead with a resp... infection! Sinusitis, Bronchitis, & maybe even some pneumonia! I am terribly ill!!! And, I'm sitting on empty too! I got to figure out how to get to get my AB's once I get the script!? And, then how to get home to my babies!?
I can't breathe!!! I'm dizy as hell! And, I'm sweating perfusely & about to pass out! But waiting is the name of the game!?
Thanks Choppe! And, everybody else too!!!
I fell myself a couple of weeks ago and I thought I was ok.
I was not ok. I ended up going to the ER via ambulance being I suffered a head injury, scrapes, cuts, bruises and I now have a hematoma on each knee which will take a long time to heal.
I was x-rayed everywhere and luckily no broken bones.
I still do not feel quite right.
Please, get some medical attention.
This is no laughing matter.
I'm not sure how everyone's mobility is, but falling can alter your life more than you can imagine! Although I've had MS for the past 32 years, I didn't require using a cane until 1994. It was rough, but I was still autonamous & could still drive.
Then nearly 5 years ago (2007), I had to undergo spine surgery for a severely ruptured disc. I spent the next 3 weeks in "inpatient Rehab." & required use of a walker.
Wanting to do all that I could to help the healing process, I had a PT come to assist me with therapy. She thought she was helping me when she moved the front wheels of my walker from the outside to the inside............WRONG MOVE, as this lessened my base of support!
The following day (1 week home from Rehab.) I fell in my kitchen (concrete floor) & not wanting to injure my fresh surgical wound, I landed "ass over tin cups" right into the trash can! It only took a few moments to realize that I had severely injured myself. A trip to the ER by ambulance, revealed I had fractured my pelvis on the right side ( which had been my "good/better" side. Back into Rehab. for the next 3 weeks! My "good/better" side was worse than my "bad" side, so now my bad side became my good side.
The pelvic fracture caused nerve damage that never healed & caused my bladder problem to be TWICE as bad. I now use approx. 300 bladder pads each month!
It changed my gait, I drag my right foot, constantly require using a walker..........causing me to no longer being able to drive......thus, took away my autonomy!!!!! Frankly, this changed my life more than I can tolerate & I'm NOT doing well with this level of disability!
All this to say...............people, PLEASE......don't take falling lightly!
If your balance is faulty........swallow your pride, protect yourself & make use of a cane! 2 excellent ones are the "Strongarm" & the "Hurry Cane".
Don't take chances & end up like ME! Ending up losing your autonomy/independence is NOT something you want. Having MS is devastating enough..........do whatever you must to protect yourself so your life isn't any harder than it already is! Thanks for reading. My best........Maggie
Thanks for the tip re: "Strongarm" & the "Hurry Cane". I need something better that is for sure.
When I try to use a quad cane I get all tangled up in it and it is more of a danger than an aid.
I also have a few different walkers w/seats on them. The best and sturdiest one I have has no seat and I got it several years ago from the MSAA New Jersey along w/a shower chair and a few other useful items.
You Maggie (and me for that matter) are excellent examples of why to take every single thing you can do to prevent falls seriously and never laugh about falling.
I've broken bones and I found out as a result of my recent ER visit and all of those damned x-rays that I also have developed arthritis in my spine which is not good news at all!
I hope you get better Maggie --- it is possible and thank you for sharing you story.
I'm not sure where to get a "Strongarm" & the "Hurry Cane" but I will look. If anyone knows, please post here or message me.
Take care EVERYONE and do all you can to NOT fall! Please!
I am soooo very very sorry for your falls & that they were sooo devastating to you esp... Maggie! It is just horrible & terrible what happened to you & how you are suffered!
So!? I wanted to say that first & then to also add a few other thoughts--regarding my own fall!
I didn't laugh at mine when I first fell, but I have as time has passed! I mean, really!? It's the best thing that I CAN DO FOR MYSELF!!
I DID GO TO THE ER!!--THE DAY THAT I TOOK MY STAR BACK TO THE VET--it is posted on here somewhere!? I have no broken bones!!! Luckily! And, so, I can laugh it all I want now! I am still having some sorenss & some pain, but I am doing okay, other than that & being sick right now! Another respirtory thing! Sinuses, & bronchi shit!
I do NOT laugh at other people's pain, or falling--UNLESS THEY DO, & I am doing it WITH THEM!!!
I already have gotten to where I take life entirely too seriously--DUE TO THE VERY VERY LIKELY POSSIBILITY OF MS, & DUE TO ALL THE SHIT THAT GOES WITH IT, INCLUDING ALL THE FALLS!
I too have stenosis, arthritis, spurs, & my upper spine is nothing but powder now! So I know the effect of long term shit from falls, as well as some really bad wrecks, a TBI, & separated rib cage! I have long term damage EVERYWHERE IN MY BODY, PRETTY MUCH!? Chest! Entire rib cage! Brain! Spine! Knees! Etc...
But I get entirely depressed enough over all of it! And, even get suicidal a LOT over all of it! ALL OF IT REALLY REALLY STRESSES ME OUT!!!! And, so!? I can either make myself worse & sicker & destroy my body even more by being TOO serious about it all & off the chart with crazy anxiety!? OR I CAN CHOSE TO LAUGH AT IT & MAKE SOME JOKES ABOUT IT! AND, I CHOSE TO LAUGH AT IT RIGHT NOW & TO MAKE SOME JOKES ABOUT IT!
Having said that!!--IF YOU FALL, DO GO TO THE ER, EVERY SINGLE TIME, & GET IT CHECKED OUT!!! SOMETHING SERIOUS COULD BE WRONG!? SO DON'T BLOW IT OFF!
However!? When you find out that nothing is broken & that your going to live, FIND A WAY TO LAUGH AT IT!!!! IT'S ALL YOU GOT! IT'S THE ONLY REAL CONTROL THAT YOU HAVE!!!
In regard to the "Strongarm" Cane", I called Medical Supply places & found one that stocked them. It's quite an impressive cane & one that should prove to provide excellent stability, should I eventually be able to use a cane again!
As for "The Hurry Cane", just go to TheHurryCane.com & you're all set! I believe they're running a special right now + free shipping.
I hope this helps. If you obtain either one (or both), let us all know what you think? - Maggie
