I've had that sensation in my thigh for oh, 11 or 12 years, long before my MS dx.
Too date you are the second person I've run up against that has this "ear thing" as I call it. It drives me crazy, I must admit and how to explain this in words is next to impossible so I tend to never mention it out of FEAR, fear that I'll be thought to be insane.
Let us know what you find out about it from your doctor!
Happy New Year 2016 in the meantime ... :)
When I was a young child I was allergic to all fruits. I 'outgrew' this around age 8.
In the months prior to my 'episodes' I had made dietary changes to include many fruits - 2-4 servings per day. I cut out those fruits and the episodes nearly disappeared.
Now I get them when I'm stressed: both stress and allergy/immune reactions raise cortisol levels in the blood which can cause unusual symptoms.
I hope this helps you. What changed in your life just before the 'icy-hot' episodes started?
I have the big numb thing too. my head and my ears, my face, pretty much all of me is numb or feels that icy hot frozen burning thing. When it is happening around my ear area it is difficult to hear properly.
It hurts too, not always but the burning on my back hurts like a super sensitive sunburn that has been rubbed raw. sometimes it is only hot./dry ice burning - that is better.
I don't use any artificial sweeteners - those are super bad for us.
not sure what else it would be, except for nerve damage, MS neuropathy. I have had this one area for years now. it does really hurt.
