I do not know if I have MS or something else, but what I do know is that my grandmother died from some undiagnosed progressive disease with symptoms like MS, my mother has similar symptoms, I have my mass of symptoms and even my poor daughter who is only 10 years old constantly has headaches, dizziness, loss of balance and eye pain. And pediatricians just keep telling me not to worry about it that she may have migraines. :(

Anyhow I had never heard of MS being familial so I looked up the possibility and found this article linked below that I thought some here might find interesting. It describes a family over 4 generations with 14 cases of MS in one family. And it describes the presenting symptoms for each person and it is amazing to me how they are all different.

As you might know, there is a very large trans-generational MS study going on in the US presently. It will be very interesting to see the results when the study is completed.

Personally, I feel you should be tested so that you can begin therapy if you have MS. Leanna

Well, it must still be pretty rare, familial MS must be pretty much an anomaly. I just went to a family reunion (300+ family members) and found out that I have one relative with MS, don't even know her, she is my dad's cousin's daughter - I guess that means our grandparents were siblings. She's the only one. Most people w/MS seem to be the only ones.

Actually there is a variety of MS where it is very common to run in families where parents have it and their children have it. I know of many families where this occurs. Thus, UCLA is now doing a nationwide study on this cohort.

Not all forms of MS run in families like this.

I wasn't aware of this study that was going on. Thanks for the info I will try to look it up and watch for results. All is know is that whatever hit my grandmother was horrible. She progressed rather rapidly from being able to function to stumbling and tripping, dealing with bell's palsy, difficulty swallowing, to almost total paralysis, unable to use her legs. I don't know what she had if it was MS related or not, but either way she had no remissions once it really started to hit hard. It's scary to think of her possibly having something heriditary. And since she recevied no diagnosis from her idiot doctor we have no idea what she had or if we riks facing the same fate.

My hubby and I both have been diagnosed with MS, we have 4 kids, I hope they dont have it or get it also. I am concerned about our 13 year old daughter, she has urinary problems, unable to completely empty, and then right back in bathroom to try, or just dribbling. She gets overheated, and gets sick from it. Pretty scary indeed. We did not meet because we had MS, like a support group or anything, we have been together for 19 years, he was diagnosed in 2000, my first attack came in 2002, and I was diagnosed after my second attack in 2007.
