Just a thought . . . which would be more akward for you, using the walker or taking a tumble while you were out? Would using the walker conserve your strength enough to help you enjoy your time out more?
What about asking the PT if using two canes would make them happy? Two canes would be at your side and not out in front like a walker.
Sorry, as you can see I have no answers, just thoughts to ponder.
Perhaps make some guidelines for yourself when you will use your walk and when you will use your cane?
People in w/c often carry a cane on the w/c for when cane walking is more appropriate
What kind of guidelines can you think of.? During a period of relapses for me, balance mostly. I used my walker in side and outside all the time.
Then it became easier for me to use my cane inside but still my walker outside.
Then I could walk unassisted inside but I used my cane outside. EXCEPT when I was in the university going to a class i Was taking. When I used my cane to get to the class, I often fell asleep during the class...so then I used my walker :) to get to the class and I stayed awake for the class.
Then it got irritating to alway be carrying my cane around outsid, but still sometime I would curse myself for not having it when it would have been useful--so I started carring a folding cane in a pouch so I would have it for those ocassions that it would be helpful.
Now I mostly don't carry my folding cane, unless I am going a long distance, a business situation where don't to be embarrassed at not having it when I need it, when I will be crossing a lot of streets with cross walks and I will need to stand waiting for the light--standing is more difficult than walking----or with no traffic light and I will have to wait for a lull in the traffic to cross or iif I will be walking on an uneven ground, like a park or beach...
I don't think your PT was telling you you had to use the walker ALL the time. I think she was telling you you are in a transition where you will be needing top use you walker MORE.
What are some situation where you think you will use your walker over your cane? Maybe it will make your PT satisfied if you were transitioning into using you walker more.
You're the best person to judge, but you have to be honest with yourself.
One thing I see on occasion and envy are the walkers on wheels that have a built in seat ! Many's the time I wish I could sit down ! At least, sit on something that wouldn't soil my pants, or hurt my butt !
I would prefer to use the walker & be safe than fall when out. Sometimes you may not need & other times you would,
I decorated mine with stickers!
Having the seat is the biggest benefit as when fatigue or "the wobblies" hit I can stop & sit immediately. I always carry a drink bottle in the walker basket so can have some at any point.
Another thing our physio & ot have said is definately use a 4 wheel not 3 wheel walker for safety.
