I have previously used orthotics & they can be of great assistance if they are suitable. I would see an orthopaedic specialist (or whoever organises the foot supprts) & get them to assess both feet. A lot of people with ms use the foot supports for both feet & I am getting close to needing one on my worst foot too.
As for the crutches, in Australia we dont have to get a referral for getting them or a walker. We can buy our own (& often cheap on ebay & other places), or we can wait for the government funding to be approved (6-12 months) or hire if only for a short term.
If you are getting crutched you need to consider ir carefully
1 - do you have good balance/stability
2 - Are your arms & hands strong & not giving pain at all/ If you se crutches you have to have both above,
3 - How are you going to carry things? even handbags/shoulder bags can get in the way, carrying a drink/food to the table etc becomes a nightmare & people often have to use only 1 crutch to do so, which is not safe if both feet bad.
3 - how far can you walk without crutches & how far can you do it with crutches? (I know I can't now due to bad balance etc)
4 - Do you need to sit down a lot when out to things, like shopping, leisure activities etc.
I decided after advice from physios & ms society workers, not to use crutches but use a 4 wheel walker as I can carry things, much more stable & safe, have a seat to sit on at any time, is accepted that if using a walker you are disabled & more people will acknowledge that you do have issues & need room (so not knocking into you as much) & often offer help if you are trying to reach something you are struggling with.
Also a walker should get you a disbled placard I would hope as it is a mobility aid.
Hope I have given you some helpful ideas & take care of yourself too.
I am a teacher, and normally wear a backpack to carry my stuff. As I wrote previously, I have tried using a crutch (one of those forearm ones is the only type they have around here), but I have the issue of the leg that won't respond to going up stairs, and I am pretty sure I can't get it to help with that leg going up stairs.
I would hope that your Neurologist would give you the form that would allow you to get the disabled placard, I simply had to ask my Neuro, and then I took the form into the DMV and got it there.
Have you asked your Neurologist?
I find that if I need to walk long distances, like if I were to go to a mall for shopping, I will take my walker.
I do hope you can get this taken care of. My 4 braces do make me look rather like a mechanical penquin. But, I am ok with my "new look" since I know that the braces do assist me in walking.
I hope you get this figured out well,
I have to physically lift my leg to get it into my van because the threshold is so high. I cannot imagine going a lot of stairs. Hope that your foot drop can be addressed with PT.
The system is so rigid because there is so much fraud, but it seems enormously unfair as I really do need it!
