Today we went to another ms seminar, this one was about Ampyra. It was good as there were patients that are or have been on it. They showed videos of before and after and explain how it doesn't work for everyone.
I have been somewhat hesitant about using this but my daughters want me to give it a try, I did the walking test and fail, of course. So I'm a candidate for it. I did the paperwork and just have to wait.
The dr was explaining how you need to exercise, because the more muscle mass you've lost, the harder will be to keep up with what the pills allows you to do and the lack of exercise is why people fall or stumble more.
Are you taking Ampyra? Tell me something....

I've been taking Ampyra for about 9 months now, it has helped some. The biggest or most noticeable for me is it relieves the heavy foot feeling I get in my right foot. I've improved on the walking test after the 3 month trial, and then again last month again after 6 months, couple seconds each time. My balance is off, so I don't move to fast going anywhere, too stubborn to use my cane.

Yes it DID help me to be steadier and walk MUCH BETTER after just 5 days!!! I had to stop because of side effects.
It gave me horrible lower back pains; felt like the back of a hammer (to pull out nails) was being driven into my back constatly. I had sceary heart seizeing! My stomach and whole abdomen was just killing me too. More trouble sleeping than I usually have. My urine was also crystalizing. I felt very VERY nervous over everything! Kinda made me into a total wacko.
Be VERY carfeful with this drug!It works quickly so watch out! I WANT to walk again without the freaken crutches too, but the side-effects stopped this pidgen killer for me.

Unfortunately, though, I think I started having periodic small (maybe 10-15 second) seizures which might possibly have been BECAUSE of it. Then I had the BIG one, a Tonic-Clonic (Gran Mal) while driving in Houston traffic. Fortunately there was an accident ahead of me, so I was not moving. I remember worrying about getting back to work late and then I woke up in a hospital.
Not positive this is what caused it, but there are warnings about it if you've ever had a seizure, NOT to take it. I miss it, but no more for me! I've been on the anti-seizure medication Keppra for a while and have not had an event of ANY sort for well over a month now.
