After over 4 years of fighting for Social Security I got it. With the aid of an attorney I was able to be seen before a judge and be found 100% disabled. I'm happy that I finally am getting something out of this but would give it up in a heartbeat to be without MS again.

I was like oneblhs, I applied in Oct. 2005 and approved in Dec. 2005. But, I made an appt. with my local office and took all of my medical documents with me, including my MRI report. Plus, my doctor told me that I needed to retire and she filled out the paperwork. As suggested, you should be able to get back SS from the time that a doctor declared you disabled. I think what helpe me was that I was a State employee and they had already labeled me disabled and I am sure that helped.
I would gladly work again if I could. I am 39 and that is a bad strike against me..my aunt got disability but when she did she was over the age of 50. I am told is MUCH easier being over 50 to get than being my age. Now, what is wrong with that picture...........A LOT.
Sorry I offend anyone, but it is the plain hard truth. The young get passed off a lot more than older people because we are not SUPPOSED to have these problems. I was an insurance professional for 17 years. You think I want to be sitting here not able to work? NOT!!!!

Since then, my disability through the VA has gone from 30-50-70-80 % and just recently was raised to 100% and I was declared "unemployable" ... it WILL make a pretty substantial difference in pay, WHEN they start paying me for it!
One of the things people don't seem to understand, is, to collect SSD (Social Security Disability, which I am sure you are talking about, and not SSI - Supplemental Social Security Income). You have to be declared 100% disabled and you have to have worked and paid into the Social Security system, and your "pay-out" will be based on how much you have paid into the system.
Oh and another story, when they (the VA) raised me to 80% disability, they backdated the effective date and paid me about $6K in back-pay ... a month later I got a letter saying they had overpaid me, and wanted it ALL back, and were just going to stop my pay altogether until it was repaid ...
We'll just see about THAT! I have all the info I need and am currently writing a "letter of dispute" ...
