You need someone you will be comfortable with, so be honest with yourself--if you have trouble trusting males, it might be wise to look for a female, for example. If you can talk to them on the phone before you actually schedule an appointment, it would be good to ask them what their stance is on DID, because there are those who are either not trained or do not believe in its existence, and these will obviously not be helpful for you. You may or may not have many choices--if you can find someone who seems genuine and open to learning more about and working with DID, at least, you are better off than you'd be with a trauma specialist who is highly recommended but does not believe in DID.
