Multiple Personalities Support Group
Dissociative identity disorder is a diagnosis described as the existence in an individual of two or more distinct identities or personalities, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. At least two of these personalities are considered to routinely take control of the individual's behavior, and there is also some associated memory loss,...
Here's the thing. I have DID, and I work in the mental health field... specifically, I work in an inpatient psychiatric unit. I do believe that recovery is most likely when we are followed by a treatment team that includes a therapist (either a social worker or a psychologist--though I prefer social workers) and a psychiatrist. Medication does help, but it is not the first line treatment for DID... psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy is.
And I suppose, comparable to other disorders, DID is fairly rare. But it's not THAT uncommon.
The truth is that this prof might be doing a lot of research and having very little contact with patients. This prof probably just doesn't know what the fuck she's talking about.
I've also found that when people deny sexual abuse and its results, they are not dealing with their own unprocessed trauma. I mean, okay, that's not UNIVERSALLY true, but it's generally true in my experience. I always try to keep that in mind.
I wonder how long ago my psyc book was written smdh
Our society doesn't know, and doesn't want to know.
That includes psych professors.
What really irks me is when psychiatrists dont believe in the diagnosis even though its in their bible called the DSM. Its infuraiting when a professional takes you on as their lab rat because it looks good to be treating someone with DID. Ive got no problem when a professional comes forward and says they have never worked with someone who has DID but is willing to learn. However, when they have no idea and try to act as though they are an expert it pisses me right off.
My version: when is a good time to tell your romantic interest(s) that you are a committee?
