Lemme tell ya a little story....
My best friend Lou (not Loum, another fellow...) and I met at the end of 2010 on a science forum, where I was having suicidality steaming out of my ears...He apparently liked me and did not want me to croak myself, and so suggested "Inner child work."
Immediately I saw an image of a corpse-child. She was dead and rotted, climbing out of a pool, filthy water streaming out of her empty eyesockets and mouth, rotted flesh and clothing hanging off of her.
So I imagined a closet for her to hide in, with a giant pile of stuffed animals to hide under. She hid under there wetly, and I left plates of cookies out for her. Eventually she dried up and began to sleep in a bed I imaged for her.
Then one day she woke up...It was like a nuclear furnace of LOVE had gone off in my chest. HOLY CRAP! I just radiated this enormous love at everyone and everything for a few hours.
Then I got this image of her lying down to sleep...and it shut off.
By that time I'd also found Fisher and was suspecting Shawn...and inner child work is not supposed to turn up inner kids in the plural...so I was starting to wonder if...there was more going on than I initially thought.
But...that was a really mindblowing day.
I had no idea I had ever, ever had the capacity to love like that.
That's how I loved my mom and dad, with my entire being, white-hot, like the center of the sun. And it was thus they broke me, so that very ability to love so deeply...was dangerous. >littleme< went away when I was six.
She's been gone 32 years. That I got her back is very beautiful, that I lost her for so long is incredibly sad.

I attach very strongly, once the attachment is made. It's very childlike and intense. It's very painful to lose it, too. It's like being abused all over again.
But I agree - that love, that childlike kind of love, is incredibly intense and powerful.
