Well, even though I went through with a d&c my doctor told me a few things if I were to go with having a mc naturally. I know that you should ovulate before your next cycle because in order to have a cycle you need to have an unfertilized egg. From what I was told, it's better not to use tampons with your next cycle because then you will could know if you have left over tissue that wasn't passed. When you have your next period will depend upon how soon your body gets back on track with hormones and such. I was told I would have to wait at least one cycle to have sex again just to be sure that the lining of the uterus was thick enough.

Thank you so much. my doctor did not talk to me about the natual mc at all, I had my d&c scheduled for the next day and that night I went through the entire process at home... the last thing I wanted to do was go in for another surgical procedure after going through hours of hell @ home. I know some of the questions sound silly, but he told me nothing and I didn't know if I did have sex if I needed to be careful. I guess there is no calender to follow for this stuff. I think I will call my doctors office tomorrow and make sure no follow up is necessary. Thanks again.

When I had my m/c, my doctor told me no sex for six weeks (I was in my second trimester when I lost my twins.) and was also told not to use tampons for six weeks to avoid infection. You should ovulate before you get your period again. It can take 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer to get your period. It took me 5.5 weeks with both losses. I am sorry your doctor basically dismissed your concerns. My doctor did that too. I am just lucky that I also had a great RE and pernatologist who helped me make it through. I was told after a natural miscarriage not to use tampons or have sex for 2 weeks. I didnt get my next period until 4 weeks after my miscarriage, however I was told the average was about 6 weeks. I was also told that you can ovulate before you get your first period, and my doctor suggested using condoms to avoid getting pregnant before I had my period. Oh and I believe that after miscarriage women can get a period anywhere from 4-8 weeks after the loss. I hope that helps you out a bit.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I too have been through the horror of miscarrying at home and can understand the state you were in when you spoke to your doctor. You are right to be disappointed. I think follow-up care is warranted no matter whether the loss occurs naturally at home or with surgery. Please consider a new doctor if you feel you aren't getting the care you need.

As far as your questions go, wait at least 2 weeks for intercourse, tampons etc. because of the chance of infection. Your uterus is healing and needs to be protected to prevent further complications. Watch for signs of infection the next few weeks, like fever, continued cramping and bleeding. I agree with the other responses about the next period: it varies greatly when it will come, from 4 to 8 weeks after the miscarriage. It may also take a couple cycles to be back on your normal schedule. For example, I had a period 28 days after my losses but then the next 2-3 cycles were all 34-35 days long before my cycle settled into its normal 29 days.

i was told wait two weeks for sex.
dont use tampons while the mc is happening but fine for the next cycle.
its okay to have sex, but use a condom and try to wait at least through one cycle before getting pregnant again.
good luck. i know its hard. i am surprised they didnt answer these questions for you. do they have a nurses line you can call just to check on how your dr would handle it?
