I have the prothrombin mutation (clotting disorder) and the MTHFR mutation. MTHFR does not increase your risk of clotting unless you have elevated homocysteine levels. Doctors can check that by a urine test. I'm surprised you had a dr recommend lovenox at all for the MTHFR. With this mutation, your body has a harder time processing certain vitamin Bs and that's how the homocysteine levels can rise. It's much more complicated than this but this is the simplest explanation. Also... Your risk depends mostly on which form of this mutation you have. Are you heterozygous.... Homozygous... All your dr should be doing for this one is giving you a supplement for vitamin Bs. Some doctors do Folbee and others do a more direct form but I can't remember what it's called. I especially don't see a need for blood thinner if they know why you've had 3 miscarriages. You should be looking into genetic testing (karyotyping) for yourself and your partner to see if that is the cause of the chromosomal abnormalities if you haven't already.

My husband and I had the karyotyping genetic testing, both came back normal. I am on a vitamin B supplement right now. I am not sure if I am heterozygous or homozygous. It sounds like when I get pregnant again I should have my doctor check for elevated homocysteine levels in my urine. In the case it rises, Lovenox could be an option. Thank-you so much for this explanation it was very helpful. When I find a doctor, hopefully, they will give me reassurance of appropriate actions to take after reviewing my records. Because this past doctor suggested Lovenox, I have in my head that if I do not get this shot that I could loose a baby later in pregnancy.

I don't think that blood thinner is the treatment for elevated homocysteine levels. Lovenox acts on the proteins in the blood to thin it out. Homocysteine is a hormone/chemical in our bodies. I would talk to your doctor about it for sure. But honestly.... You really don't need blood thinner from the sound of what you have going on. Don't let one doctors opinion freak you out though. I was on lovenox for both of my last two pregnancies and they still ended in miscarriages. (my first loss was a stillbirth @ 36wks.) Being on it may help you... But it may not make a difference either. And you don't have an increased risk of clots any more than another pregnant woman based on your history so keep that in mind when making a decision. The benefits of taking something during pregnancy should outweigh the negatives. And that is different for every person.

Of course! I'm sorry if I am coming off as unsupportive... My goal was to be informative but I'm not the best writer. I just hate it when doctors freak patients out or dictate things without educating them! And that's what it sounded like your first doctor was doing.
