My cousin had 2 preterm births before they discovered she has an incompentent cervix. Her oldests daughters had to be in the NICU for months before they came home. She had her 3rd daughter in March. She carried her full term with the help of treatment for her incompentent cervix. There is hope.

I have been down a long and sad road to finally get diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. I have had 3 second trimester miscarriages between 15 and 17 weeks. Each miscarriage happened in the same way, my water broke without any contractions and I had to deliver. After my second miscarriage, I went through every test imaginable and they all came back normal. So I went on to get pregnant again hoping that it would be fine, only to have my water break again at 17 weeks. This time I actually felt the bag of waters protruding and then they broke. That little piece of info that I told the doctor helped them diagnose me. We are going to try again in March or April and I will be having a cerclage put in 10-12 weeks along and I pray that everything will be fine.

You are very lucky to have a doctor that is willing to diagnose you after one miscarriage. Unfortunaltly it took mine 3 times. I would not wish loosing 3 babies on anyone! Loosing one is heartbreaking enough and I hope and pray that you have found your answer as to what the problem is.

I'm so sorry for your loss! While I don't have your diagnosis, I have become a reluctant self-taught expert on miscarriage since my three losses. First, there is a highly successful treatment for incompetent cervix called cerclage. Basically, early in pregnancy (usually between 10 and 12 weeks), your cervix is stitched shut. The doctor removes the stitches a few weeks before the due date. A good book to read about this condition is To Full Term by Darci Klein.
Secondly, six months does sound like a long time to wait. Did you have any complications with your loss? If not, consider a second opinion. You'll need a specialist for cerclage surgery anyway. I agree there is hope! Get all the information possible and the best care you can. I wish you in best for your future. Take care.

I just lost my newborn twins due to an incompetent cervix. I was actually diagnosed at 21 weeks during a routine check-up. The doctors immediately performed an emergency cerclage and I was put on strict hospital bedrest. But since the cerclage was made in a later stage of the pregnancy, it ended up by getting infected and sent me into labor way too soon for my angels to survive.

I am now researching everything I can on this horrible condition. It turns out that women usually learn about it when they lose their baby during the 2nd trimester. I've made a battle plan with my high-risk ob/gyn for the next pregnancy:

- Early cerclage (either before the pregnancy as I'm doing IVF or at 12 weeks)
- Tocolytic medication to prevent contractions
- Full bedrest from 12 weeks on, until 35 weeks.

According to him, that's the recipe for a successful pregnancy.

i lost my son Elijah 6 months ago when i was 22 weeks along and found out it was because i had an incompentent cervix.... my doctor told me to wait to try again and to have hope... it will happen... my fiance and i are trying again now and i am about 5 days late.... i took a test 1 day before i missed cause i was anxious and it said negative so im going to wait til next week to take another test... hopefully our wish came true....

My cousin was dx with incompetant cervix after she lost her son at 20 weeks, on Mother's Day. She has since gone on to have 2 healthy girls, she had a cerclage put in to prevent early labor. It worked wonderfully. There is definitely hope!
