I am dealing with this right now. I get 18 to 20 migraines a month, and medication isn't really working, and leaves me very "funky". I'm an elementary school teacher, so I have to be with "it" at all times!

Last November, I was able to get private Disabilty Ins.(without answering health questions). That's probably what I'm going to use/do this coming school year, because I find myself unable to fulfill my duties at work. Unfortunately, my private insurance is only good for 2 years.

So, I'm very interested in knowing the answer to your question.

I got disability when I was 49. an 56 now. I worked full time in prievios years and for awhile was able tomake my own hours which helped. The headaches became more frequent. Anyway being single I had to try. But yes I got,it. You really need your doctor to be on your side as there are papers to fill out. I wast turned dwon twice which normal and then got a lawyer. They will take 25% of settlelment which is worth it. My lawyer said migraines caoont be proven by , so I had 30 years of records. You must prove how they impair your functioning to make a substanial income. It could take up to a year. for more info look up the social security webside on disability.

I have found that its amazing what you find you work through. The amount of pain and disability I work through on a daily basis is sad (and an amazing feat). I find that I function so well feeling poorly that I have to remind people I dont feel well or they forget and keep talking to me while I just want to pass out. I rely on the triptans and hold off pain meds for the reason you mention - I can't be foggy all day. I also am starting to consider a lower stress job with less travel (basically a job not a career) to minimize my stress and increase my ability to take a sick day when needed. I recommend biofeedback to help you learn coping mechanisms for when you have a migraine and still need to function.

I have been unable to work to support myself for the last 5 yrs. It has been a struggle due to my migraines. Usually have them 12-18 days a month now. That is down from daily. I will head tomorrow, as a matter of fact, to my Social Security office to grab the paper work to get this all started. I am told I am sure to get turned down the first time. I know that my regular neuro would prefer that I work to keep my spirits up even if it is part time but I have tried this over and over again. It always ends up in me leaving due to my condition. Finally I end up here in much pain and sufferings days outa the week. So...I think this is best. Right now with my husband's income we are okay but I will have no retirement and I need to think about my future. I have nothing due to my pain and migraines. They have taken my career away. Hmfff.
