Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
Due to the fact I have anxiety and depression and take prozca for it, my medical wont give me anything to help me. She said sorry anything I could give u may counter react with your other meds. And if that happens and u end up in a crisis and I could be liable.
Well I guess if u have a mental illness and migraines u can't get meds that may help even a little.
Tomorrow, we're trying Botox for migraine. I cannot express how much I hope it'll work.
If it doesn't.... I don't know what to do.
Do any of you have suggestions?
Like you I have low blood pressure as well and I can not tolerate the depression medications for my migraines. I am just so sensitive to so many medications. I am currently only doing the magnesium. I started seeing a neurologist a couple weeks ago but he just wanted to put me on Topamax and I don't like how that is making me feel so I have stopped taking it.
I'll let you know!
I had mono as a freshmen in college which triggered my first migraine. My neurologist put me on Topomax which worked pretty good, but after about a year, I had awful kidney problems. I did not like to drink many liquids- about 20 oz of tea a day. That did not help matters. Topomax is very hard on your kidneys.
My neurologist switched me to ZONOGRAN. I had to increase slowly to 100 milligrams a day, and it has been a life saver!! It works great. I take it every night - if I forget, exactly two mornings later, I will have a migraine. I was also given relpax for relief if I do get a migraine. It works well, but takes an hour or two.
Caffeine sometimes helped but it almost always caused a 'bounce back' migraine which is even worse.
Diet has a huge impact. My neurologist said to avoid nitrates and legumes. My brother was able to control his migraines with diet alone, but I have to have meds as well as diet. Nitrates are in almost all packages meats- deli meats; bacon, sausage, oriental food usually have preservatives that contain nitrates. Peanut butter has legumes(peanuts). Lima beans are legumes. Wine, dark colas and cheese are big triggers. Google the list of things to avoid. It can really help.
Sleep is very important. Also, traveling from sea level to high altitudes (mountains) usually triggers one, as well as dehydration.
Plenty of the right fluids at all times is so important.
I hope this will help.
Keep in mind that a neurologist or one that specializes in migraines is who you need to see. General practitioners are not always up to date on the best treatments available.
Good luck and keep trying- it is worth it, even if it takes a while!
