Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
I have been though rebound headaches. MANY times. They really are hell, and in my opinion, are worse than the original headache you were trying to get rid of in the first place.
Coming off the medicine is very, very hard, because basically you have to go though the pain til you come out the other end. That means you can't slip up and take something for it while you are trying to get it out of your system. During this time, you need to make it as easy on yourself as you can. It may take up to a week for the rebounds to stop. Lots and lots of ice bags on your head, I have found, works. Being in dark rooms help. Staying away from strong smells helps. Also, if you are on any medication that might help you get through it might help. I have medicine for nausea, which I take alot when I"m trying to get over rebounds. I also take xanax which helps only slightly.
The last thing I would advise. See if your doctor will give you a short term steriod like decadron. It's amazing at breaking up headaches, though I never tried it for a rebound, only for an actual migraine.
Good luck.
